Canon 24-105mm advice

Would love to hear owners thoughts/views/experience of the Canon EF 24-105mm lens please?

Any example photo's appreciated.

I'm quite keen it being my next Canon choice.
 
It's ideal for your full frame, not quite wide enough sometimes on a cropped sensor.
Only goes to F4 so you can soon be bumping up the ISO.
Good points are that it's good otherwise!
 
ive been having a yard sale and selling most of my lens..the 24-105 was one of them..achieved £550 on ebay..10 yrs old ..amazing how they hold the value.

I heard there's an issue with a certain years 24-105 worth looking into..just recall seeing it.

but for me ,I just didnt use it,but its a good general lens... My favs are 16-35 17-200 2.8 . 50mm 1.2 .expensive but uber good.

I love mine to bits, a great general purpose lens that covers a useful focal length range on FF. Mine has been very sharp, and I'm not aware of any major issue with sample variation.

If you have a look at my Flickr pretty all my shots on there in the last 18 months are from the 24-105.

Very early ones had a problem with flare under certain conditions but I believe but these were recalled and fixed free of charge by Canon. Have a look at the review on the-digital-picture.com for further details.
 
It's a good all round lens with quite a reach and fairly solidly built. I do use it quite a bit as a walk around lens as its very versatile.

It's nice on a 5d2, however I'd never say its my all time favourite lens - there is just something that makes me think it's just a slightly above average lens, rather than a stellar performer.

The lens is sharp and performs really well, but I recall being 'wowed' more when I had my 17-55 on a 40d!!
 
How would this lens compare to a 17-55 Canon or 17-50 non VC tamron as a walk about lens on a cropped sensor?
 
I really enjoy using my 24-105mm f/4 L, it makes a great walk about lens especially on full frame.

It spends a lot of time on my 5D Mark II, it performs well on my 7d as well although I find the range a bit restricted at the wide end.

I've used it for everything from landscapes to still life and portraits and so long as you work round the limitations of the maximum f/4 aperture (use the IS and bump up the iso a little) I've taken some nice natural light indoor portraits with it too:)
 
I'm also considering this lens at the start of next month. I have a cropped sensor though so kinda goes against the advice given here!

Just looking for a quality walk-about lens. :)

Unless you are considering going FF in the future, I would advise you to go with the FF-S 15-85 on a crop camera. It is much more suited to a general walk-around on a crop than the 24-105.

Agreed. I know many use the 24-105 on crop but IMO 24 is a bit long at the short end.

Another alternative to the 15-85 for crop is the 17-55 IS f/2.8. Not cheap, but very, very, good.
 
Thanks guys! :) It's a lot of money so I appreciate the advice there. More thinking to do, hehe!
 
Just to add a twist - I'd describe it as a rather good jack of all trades... and all of that. The 70-105mm part is just not as good as 70-200mm is, and it is 'only f4'. 24-70mm looks sharper, but buy new and make sure it is a good copy.
