Afternoon folks,

I am thinking of upgrading to the 24-105 f4 L over the winter by selling my 17-40 f4L to part fund.

Unfortunately, I haven't had any experience of the 24-105 so just wanted to hear what you guys think?

I find the 17-40 f4 L to be a little dull, not very sharp and just a bit lame tbh. My other main lens is a 70-200 f2.8 L and as you know, it just doesn't compare.

I always feel that the photos taken using the 17-40 f4 L always look poor quality and remind me of the old days of compact and bridge cameras for me!

Is the 24-105 f4 L much better or just the same?

I sold my 17-40 and kept the 24-105, its wide enough for my needs and a perfect combo for my 5d.

Mine's wonderful.....as sharp as any of my primes wide open at any focal length. If it was f2.8 throughout, it would be absolutely perfect!!

Seems there's a few duffers out there (regarding sharpness etc) so take your time finding a good copy!!

I love my 24-105, it's the perfect walk-a-bout lens for me on FF. I've no experience of it on APS-H though so you may not find it wide enough.

It's versatility for me leads me to one of my few criticisms of it, it makes me lazy changing to my other lenses. Like the other Chris (The Greek), I'm considering getting shot of my 17-40 as it rarely gets used.

Darren, can't comment on the 24-105, however the 17-40 is a really good lens. I have no problem with sharpness and if you search the internet I am sure you will find many good images with it. Maybe you have a bad copy?

I got my 24-105 as the kit lens for a 5D2 and it was fantastic on it. I've since sold the 5D2 and got a 5D3 and recently a 7D as well and the 24-105 spent a lot of time on both of them. I got some great shots from it and mine's sharp and snappy.

I don't use it as often now as I got a Sigma 24-70 f2.8 USM to pair up with my Canon 70-200 f2.8 L MkII, but I've no plans on selling or swapping the 24-105 as it's so good. I don't do many landscape shots or I'd be tempted with a 17-40 but I find 24 plenty wide for my needs.

24-105? My first ever L series lens a couple of years back and still a great bit of kit!

Really useful range and can honestly say the only other lens I've 'loved' more has been my 50mm f1.2

Sounds good! Now i've just got to save some pennies and get around to sell the 17-40 f4!

Problem is, i'm going to need a quick turn around as I can't be without a second lens for too long...

Wise choice. I have that lens and it is on the 7D most of the time. You will never regret buying one of these beauties.

im getting one soon well looking forward to it

It's a fantastic lens. I have mine on a 7D as a walk around. I do sometimes (rarely) wish it was a little wider and faster tho, but that would cost some serious pennies!

Off topic but the 70-200 have you got the IS or non IS version if its the non IS how do you get on with it at 200mm?

I have the non-IS 70-200mm. I have never wished for the IS despite using it handheld 80% of the time. Just follow the reciprocal rule and learn good handling technique and all is fine.

I have the non IS version. When I was making the purchase, looking at the sample pics, the IS version didn't seem to be as good.

I often shoot on the 200 end in the dark (and daylight ofcourse) and never have a problem at all, infact 200 is my preferred focal length on this lens for the style of photos I do.

I never use a tripod - handheld all the way. Standing on top of a cliff in the ****ing rain and a force-gale can be hard with the length of the lens, but in time you learn where to hold the lens and to compensate.

Never used a 17-40 but have just purchased a 24-70 for my 5d classic and find it a very useable walkabout lens. Another option is the 28-135 my wife uses one and for half the price it's a bit of a bargain!
