I have been thinking long and hard about what lens to get next.

I currently have a nifty 50mm and a kit lens 18-135 with IS.

I would just like to ask a couple of questions about this lens for people in the know.

Will I see a big difference in picture quality with it being a constant F4 ap?

Is this lens good in low light on a 7D?

Is it a fast'ish lens compared to my current two, I like to take pictures of things flying or driving at high speed. Yet also I like to do a little bit of portrait at the moment and want more quality depth.

Last but least, where is the best place to buy it from as I have £600 saved.

This lens will no doubt be better quality than your existing kit it it may not be a fast in aperture terms as you 50mm.

For portraits and for a much faster lens in low light the 24-70mm f2.8 may suit your needs better.

However it doesn't have IS and is much much heavier

I dont know if the 70mm will be enough, I do often hit the 100mm mark or above on the 18-135 lens.

I will be attempting to buy a 430exii soon aswell, which should help in lowlight.

Just seen you own a 70-200 2.8 mkII, I would really like to get this lens but dont have the funds as such at the moment.

However if you want things flying and driving maybe looking for a used 70-200 f2.8 non is will be better.

It will also be great for portraits. You may need a little bit more cash but they do come up for sale in the used forums.

Have a read here on user reviews of the 70-200 http://www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=13&sort=7&cat=27&page=2

If I was able to get the 70-200 f2.8 it would have to be IS for me on the mkII version.

I have horribly shakey hands and without IS i struggle, even on a high shutter speed and lots of photos I find I am binning most of the shots to get one good to perfect'ish photo.

The IS wont help you with the higher shutter speeds though.

Having said that the Mk II can be had for about £1400 second hand and it is a great lens.

Looks like the 70-200L 4 IS might be the one to go for. Fabulous lens.

Hi there, you won't notice a big difference due to the lens being a constant F4; however you will certainly notice a difference due to it being an L glass. The results will be more punchy with better contrast and the lens managing to resolve detail and colours a bit better. I think you will find a 24-70 F/2.8 too short and the IS on the 24-105 will 90% make up the difference in low light conditions.

The 24-105 lens is a very forgiving, easy to use piece of glass and the IS invaluable. A great starter lens in the world of L glass and it'll be a slippery slope there on.

When you say things flying I think the 24-105 will be too short.

Cheers for that Sam, This will be my first L series lens and with hope of more to come.
The 70-200 f2.8 mkII is a brilliant lens and I would love to have one, one day, yet its just too big and heavy to carry on a walk about for me.

I seen posted on here that Canon was doing cashback on this lens but I can not find it any more now.

£175 cash back on the Mk2 IS makes a new 70-200 f2.8 around £1675 then?

I'd be surprised if they give cashback on Kerso's sales

'up until now' does that mean they still do? Or dont anymore?

What other info or paperwork do I need to reclaim the cash back then?
