Canon 24-105 alternatives

Check what?

Well to check the sharpness of an image I just captured, I play it back and zoom in on it to see how good it is. I've since gotten into the habit of this since realising my 450D has poor quick-AF, and really it's good practise because you just can't tell if a photo is decent on a 3 inch screen without zooming.

To do contrast-detect AF in live view, you have to turn it on in one of the custom menus. Can't remember where but it's under 'custom function' somewhere. You'll see a bit about focus in live view, you want to turn on CONTRAST DETECT AF, and not Quick AF. Then to do it you press the 'zoom out' button on the top right of the body when in live view. You'll hear the lens seeking, and after a few seconds, providing the light is acceptable, you will have a perfect focus lock. I'd help you just now but I am at work with not a camera today.

Hope this helps?

Sorry, "Check" meant "check if it's enabled"

Spotted it, it's called "Live mode" in the manual for some reason. It's only applicable to focussing in Live View though.

Thanks for explaining, most helpful

I'd also like to add, that after looking about a bit the Canon 28-105 is significantly cheaper than the 28-135, a bit smaller and lighter, and apparently has better IQ. Not only that but it's only a 3.5-4.5 aperture rather than a 3.5-5.6. Could be a winner, this one.

I think it may lack IS though, which may well be a deal breaker for me.

I've got the 28-105, it's (IMHO) a massive improvement over the kit lens from my 450D (though I actually bought it as a walk-around lens for my EOS-3 35mm ) both in terms of image quality and feel/handling. However, in terms of image quality, its no match for my mate's old (very old!) EF28-80mm f/2.8-4L USM, never mind the more modern stuff like the 24-105mm. Still - i'm not complaining as I picked it up on fleabay for around £80 so it's hardly L prices :)

I can honestly say I'll never be without a 24-105. That is unless they release a 2.8 version.

Ive been borrowing my friends lens on and off for a while but can't afford as prices are around the £800 mark, was just wondering what alternatives I have? Could anyone offer me any advise on a similar lens which is cheaper?

Do you need the extra focal length.... what about the canon 17-55mm f2.8 or tamron 17-50mm f2.8, both excellent lenses.

What about the new 15-85mm EF-S lens canon's just released, ok not as fast as the f4, but significantly better than its predecessor the 17-85mm.

Personally, the 24-105mm f4 not suited to a cropped sensor camera's, its for full frame, reason is that you lose the wide angle capability. Then because you want that as well, you get people suggesting you buy another lens to cover the wide angle bit, when common sense would tell you that perhaps its better to get one lens that does most of what you require like the 17-55mm f2.8 A good walk around lens and covers the wide angle aspect as well and is ideal on a cropped sensor camera.

Hmmm yeah the canon 17-55mm f2.8 does sound good but a quick look on ebay and they sell for around the £800 mark! :(

Iam now thinking about saving up and getting a second hand Canon 24-70 f2.8L...would this be a good idea even *** iam only using a 400d at the moment?

Will be a great lens for any canon body tbh and what a lot of people will go if not the 24-105mm, I will eventually move onto one from my 24-105mm once I have sorted out a few other bits of equipment.

Instead of looking on Ebay why not look at the classifieds on here? Get a lot better prices (compared to what you have been quoting in this thread) and peace of mind of what you getting and the condition of it.

Had a play with the 24-105 again! So want one! Looking at the canon 28-135mm IS USM again, how come its so small in comparison to the 24-105? It looks quite dated :s

The 24-105 is a pro lens so is generally better built than a consumer lens such as the 28-135mm. It also has a constant aperture of F4, for this to happen it needs to suck up a lot of light so it has to be longer and wider.

L lenses are made for top of the range cameras although many (like me) use them on crop cameras you would get the best results from a 5D/1D e.t.c

Its a big lens to bolt onto the 450D!

I switched from the 28-135 to the 24-105 and there's a BIG difference in image quality.

I did too... and it was like night and day... but before I moved I thought the 28-135 was a fab lens... and only thought about the 24-105mm when it came into my price radar... the 28-135mm is great and a bit of me wishes the 24-105mm had that extra 30mm at the long end... then it would be the ultimate travel toging lens for me!

24-105L IS F4, contact Kerso, I've just bought one from him.
White box (split from a kit), £689 + 10 del.
Can't wait to try this lens out, I've heard nothing but praise for this lens.

Your 40D will be very please with you and your 7D, well imagine the result of buying a lady a nice diamond ring ;)

Yeah ive tried the 24-105 on my 400d already as a friend has that lens. Your right its pretty beffy!

I keep hearing about crop cameras and non-crop ones...what does this mean?

I got a 24-105 from an ebayer in the US last year for just around £600 + import tax.
It has hardly been off my 40D since - my 70-200 F4 has been gathering dust.
I previously had the tamron 17-50 and thought that was good, but the canon simply blows it away.
The Tamron wasn't a bad lens, in fact it was a great lens for the price. Quite simply, the Canon is a fantastic lens. Expensive, yes. Worth it, hell yes!!!

I sold my 24-105L to replace with a 24-70 2.8L Even better than the 24-105L IMHO, although I do miss the extra reach. Also I use FF camera, so not much use to the OP maybe.
