Just a general question.

Been mooching around, window shopping, again, and in one online shop I have seen a Canon 1Dx for sale at £564.

It has 742000 actuations on it and certainly do not expect it to be mint, description indicates that it has paint loss here and there, round the strap lugs, on the base wear on the hot shoe (not that I would be using the hotshot).

No idea on the history, no idea if it has had a shutter replaced and by the looks of it it was bought then returned.

Question is, is it worth a punt or go buy something with less milage on it?

Cheers.

Maybe a question for @KIPAX ?

Canon EOS-1D X shutter rated lifespan is 400000 actuations.

I personally would want something that looks at least clean and tidy. Its a personal thing for sure but important nevertheless. I've seen plenty that went on ebay with fraction of usage around that price. The price that is now largely symbollic. But I reckon if I would get one I would now want mkII

I guess your saying No?

I am aware of what Canon quote for their machines but you see so many with hight numbers, thought I would just ask,

Came across this after I had posted the question. Thing is I would have no issue buying a camera of Kipax because I kind of know the history. The one I saw, history is a unknown.

Thinkng the same thing about it looking "clean and tidy" but at over 700K its not likley but not unkown.

MkII????? now there is a thought as thay are also coming down in price now.

Thanks for your responces, food for thought, but I am still undecided and may just stick with the gear I have or get something totally different.

You can never really know the history of a camera and even if you could anything can happen ... shutter go just out of warranty etc, etc.
How do you know that it won't outlast the newer one ... pays your money, takes your chance.
You say it was bought then returned, so presumably it has some sort of warranty/30day etc for you to see for yourself rather than guess?

Seems an ok price for a 1dx if it comes with a warranty.

I have no qualms about the visual appearance as my cameras get hammered anyway.

I recently picked up a very leggy 1dx ii - 1.2 million shots and it still works - I factored in a shutter replacement and it made sense to me.

It’s up to you and your personal comfort - I’d only go for that camera if it came with a good warranty (wex / Lce for example ).

FYI - it may not have been bought and returned - it could’ve been part of a part ex deal , where it’s been placed on hold and then the deal didn’t go through.

Make sure it comes with the canon charger at least. Those are expensive to replace.

It was my understanding that shutter life was real MTBF (Mean Time Before Failure). In any such process there will be outliers.

Therefore buying anything used there is a risk that, in this case, the shutter could fail anytime...... potentially more likely once over the MTBF figure!

no chance on earth,

WAYYYY better examples about for not much more money

leave it there

There's several for sale on mpb under 'heavily used' for £659, with shutter counts as low as about 200k. Lots of scuffs but of course that's just superficial, so as long as looks aren't a priority that ought to be a better option.

(You can probably skip the one with 1.5 million shutter count :D)

Funny but was taking to a friend today who has a mate that has a 1Dx with 1.5 million clicks on it and it is still going strong.

But yes, the 1.5 million shot one would not be my first choice. (y)

Well first off @chphoto has posted what i would have... If I was in need of one camera body only I would get one of those at MPB with a warranty ?

If you buy one that looks as tatty as mine you can always put a silicon skin on it for about 20 quid and it will look like new

If a body showing 700k+ shutter has had a replacement you wont know as canon dont reset the counter and they cant even tell if its been replaced

Once shutter gets to a certain point I wouldnt worry about it.. mine are nearly a million and well over a million and only one had a replacement shutter and its done 700k since then

All in all after reading your post.. 100% agree with @chphoto
