Canon 1DX release

Does anybody understand the 14fps section.

Jpeg with mirror locked up, so that's live view mode only then ?

I'll be gutted if this means the end of APS-H :(

The 1DX doesn't have enough pixels compared to the 1.3 crop factor for me (given that i quite often crop a bit on APS-c).
I can see a lot of wildlife and sports photographers being a bit dissapointed with not having both the full-frame and 1.3 crop options in the 1D line.

Looks like i'll have to try and get a mk4 before they dissapear :help:

This fact may keep the price of the MKIV's buoyant for a few years to come....

It's a bigger number than the competition offers therefore it's better in terms of marketing speak.

Whether anyone would really use 14fps unless they wanted to create a stop-motion video effect is another question. :)

I think I will be happy keeping a 1dmkIV for the 400 used for cricket and the like.. in fact its a must really as the 1dx would be backward step in that area.. but def 100% getting the 1dx for second camera and indoor use :)

First dibs on the mk4 you get rid of. And I mean that...we have history you know! ;)

No. Mirror lockup means that the mirror doesn't return down it's just the shutter that will fire. I think that means machine gunning without being able to focus between shots. You can drop to 12fps if you want RAW and/or focus between shots...

About time Canon merged the 1D line. . 14fps nothing more than a gimmick, now, when you say "spray and pray" you actually mean it  I can't se any real world use for a "Blind machine gun" That aside, this camera will suit my 35mm needs just fine.
My 1DsIII and 1DIV in the classifieds now. :naughty:

With the new wireless remote and ethernet connectivity, I can see 14fps being an effective gimmick in remote shooting situations. You could capture tens of frames and have them on your viewing station in a few seconds from a remote camera, that's got to work for some people shooting sports...

I work near Islington.shame I can't.come! Can I apply somewhere?

I think this is a brilliant bit of kit  It's definitely aimed at pros so I don't understand all the people at Dpreview or Canonrumors complaining about stuff already...

I can't wait to see all this tech trickle down to 5D and other bodies... And I am pretty sure canon will release a higher mp body later on sometime. They do know there is a market for high mpx, lower iso, lower fps camera.

So you've never watched the paparazzi holding their cameras above their heads and shooting like crazy to get that one shot of the hottest celeb of the day, or the poor unfortunate wretch trying to escape a scene in a car.

12 or 14 frames a second and a lighting fast camera doing the focusing and you have just got a more than 50% increase in your chances of getting an an image that sells to the papers for more than the cost of the camera.

Except at 14, as the mirror is locked up, you'll be in one shot focusing mode....

Only that one time in Paris when I had my old white Fiat Uno. It didn't end well. :shake:

From a Nikon user point of view it looks a very good piece of kit. As a wedding photographer it looks a VERY good piece of kit.

Were I still a Canon user I would be very keen on getting one of these.

Although at this particular crisis in my life I couldn't afford the battery, let alone the camera!

Sorry I over-egged the price in my original post at 4.00 am this morning, I had only just seen the canon rumours info and no info was available from the official Canon sites.
That's what a lightning storm and a bit of insomnia does for you in the North of Scotland.
Glad to see it's only 5 grand!

Expect it'll settle down about £4800 or so here.

Awesome! If only i had 5.3k to spare...

Don't forget to add the VAT £1,060.00 on top

Regards

Richard

Looks a great piece of kit. Presumably some things can still change between now and next years release.

I had heard that Canon were waiting on Nikon to release their offering- like the rest of us must have got bored and still be laughing after the Nikon 1.

Gauntlet well and truly thrown down now.

Nikon execs- read carefully- might learn something and give customers what they are looking for;)

''Enhanced EOS HD Video – New Compressions, Longer Recording
Centered around an all-new full-frame CMOS sensor with larger pixels than those found on the EOS 5D Mark II image sensor, the EOS-1D X utilizes new HD video formats to simplify and speed up post-production work. The two new compression formats offered on the EOS-1D X include intraframe (ALL-i ) compression for an editing-friendly format and interframe (IPB) compression for superior data compression, giving professionals the options they need for their ideal workflow. Answering the requests of cinematographers and filmmakers, the EOS-1D X includes two methods of SMPTE-compliant timecode embedding, Rec Run and Free Run, allowing multiple cameras or separate sound recording to be synced together in post production.

Canon’s all new full-frame CMOS sensor ensures that video footage captured on the EOS-1D X will exhibit less moiré than any previous Canon model, resulting in a significant improvement in HD video quality. A desired feature for many documentary filmmakers using Canon DSLRs was to enable recording beyond the four gigabyte (GB) file capacity and the EOS-1D X is the answer. The new camera features automatic splitting of movie files when a single file exceeds 4GB. The new file splitting function allows for continuous video recording up to 29 minutes and 59 seconds across multiple 4GB files; no frames are dropped and the multiple files can be seamlessly connected in post production, providing filmmakers the recording time they want in the same convenient DSLR form factor. The camera records Full HD at 1920 x 1080 in selectable frame rates of 24p (23.976), 25p, or 30p (29.97); and 720p HD or SD video recording at either 50p or 60p (59.94). SD video can be recorded in either NTSC or PAL standards.

The Canon EOS-1D X also includes manual audio level control, adjustable both before and during movie recording, an automatic setting, or it can be turned off entirely. A wind filter is also included. Sound can be recorded either through the internal monaural microphone or via an optional external microphone through the stereo mic input.''

Do you see one frame rate Nikon? Do you? How many models does it take to work it out??:bang:

Anyway, nice camera Canon:lol:

This has everything I currently want in a camera, just need to work out how to find over 5k and convince the wife! Can't really think of anything I'd like to add to it. I will be waiting to see what the new 5D brings as if it has somewhere between this an the 7D autofocus it could be a seriously good camera.

Blimey, it was only around 10 years ago that we were all shooting full frame sports (unless you were unlucky enough to be given a NC2000..)
I don't remember one positive comment about the cropped sensor then and I see it only as a good thing canon are giving us a camera which is capable of, finally, beating the D3.

Also remember it's not "just" a sports camera, it's aimed at press and editorial photographers as well, and in all of my career I've NEVER needed 14fps, or 1/8000th sec shutter speed for that matter.
Just have a look at the work of Chris Smith or Eamon Mccabe
They even managed with manual focus ;)

it does indeed look like a beast, i wish they'd spaced the focus points out a little bit though, they still seem to be biased towards the centre of the frame. it would be nice if there were a few points on the 'thirds' to aid focusing when using wide aperture lenses - that's one of the biggest weakness of the 5D - not the number of focus points, just the position of them.

The prices I have seen are inclusive of VAT..£5299 inc

I found that price earlier in the day 8.0am now warehouse express have it advertised at £5299.00 which does'nt seem to bad

looks fantastic, although I couldn't possibly want anything more out of the 5DMKII other than better and faster AF (and certainly not for another £4k). I suppose wedding togs who charge £4k a wedding could afford these cameras (theres a few in London charging even more!)

Any chance Canon can bring out an f2.8 version of the 24-105?

If your jobs get cancelled pop in to SE London for a BBQ :)

Unfortunately pics aren't worth that much to the papers anymore!

thats why i'm investing in the latest voice recording systems! its all about audio baby!

Or for me a 2nd hand Mk IV at £2800.

Doom and gloom alert.

Papers buy pictures.. Photographers sell pictures to papers... FACT

Not exactly. Was just redressing the misconception that one picture may pay for a camera.

Glad they kept the 'direct print' button :D

Well I'm a bit surprised tbh although losing the 1.3X crop is probably due, and pitching the pixels between the present 1D4 and 1DS 3 but with bigger pixels should be great for full frame users as well as satisfying the guys who will still need to crop. It must be difficult for makers to decide which way to jump the way things are changing so rapidly but this is a real curve ball from Canon and I have to say it looks awesome.

Canon still need to get into the mirrorless market pretty rapid and it will be interesting what they do with that.

Well frankly it's not for me, the main spec is great, I just want a 30(ish)MP FF sensor with user definable crop factor, hmmm......

I'd wait till you see some test shots. If Canon get this wrong they stand to upset 1DS users AND 1D users and the latter must be an enormous market for them.

... And I am pretty sure canon will release a higher mp body later on sometime. They do know there is a market for high mpx, lower iso, lower fps camera.

I am not so sure about that. In the current economic environment, It makes sense to merge the line...

"With this announcement, Canon is also officially discontinuing the EOS-1Ds Mark III (though this is largely a formality, as the company is likely to have stopped manufacturing this body eons ago). Going forward, the EOS-1D X will be the only 1-series camera the company makes, or at least it will be once it becomes a shipping product starting next year" (Source)

Putting the pro 1D body to one side for a minute - It won't happen as I suspect 5D3 will remain a slower high res (30MP or so) option however - I'd love to see a similar next generation coming together of 'full frame' and 'sports' at 'enthusiast' level in the form of a less dedicated spawn of the 5D2 MP and 7D AF & FPS.

Dare I say a fresh Canon take on Nikon's superb D700 view.
