Canon 1DX - Official Owners Thread

Well I disabled everything on the network card and dropped it down to 10 m/bit half duplex and it still worked but if I get a chance tonight I'll test it on an old Dell laptop

Cool, although I understood auto rate and auto negotiation has to be left on if only one end has auto dimx?
Maybe that has changed then...might be best to continue by pm as bit off topic maybe? Relevant bit to 1dx seems to be it does have it camera end.

Just joined the 1Dx club, the only issue I am having is getting the thing to connect to my windows 8 laptop but I will get there.

Have you installed the utility and updated it? Had to go through it all.

I downloaded the latest canon software but still no joy.

I think I will uninstall and reinstall and see if that makes a difference.

Hi all. Just received my 1DX. Upgraded from a 5dII. I am still at awe with this camera, coupled with a 50L, I am just gobsmacked. It's my first foray into the 1D family. Money well invested!

Welcome to the forum, you'll enjoy the 1 DX, everyone here is delighted.

George.

Covered my first rugby match with the 1Dx and am impressed, out of 324 images it only missed focus on 12 and they could have been my fault.

Heres one from the game.

Is anyone else having issues with AF not locking?.
I have had problems with the lens just hunting and not locking in both AI servo and one shot AF. It happens at random times and it resolves by removing the lens switching the camera off, Re- attaching the lens and turning the camera on.
Even then, the problem may return for no apparent reason.
It has happened with both my 300mm MKII and 600mm MKII.
Lenses and camera run with latest firmware.

I've not had mine long but have not experienced that.

What settings are people using for bif shots?

I've got about 9k between the two bodies, Ivan, and 90% of those have been in AIservo with a 300/2.8 and 200/2 for sports (football and rugby)....I've not experienced this.

I had some problems on Saturday night at a party with the 1Dx and the 24-105/4 but it was pretty damn dark.

I've had it when the lens was at the extreme of focus and the subject was at the other extreme, I had this with my Mk4 too though.

No Ivan, I've used 70-200 mk2 with and without 1.4 mk3, 300 2.8 mk1 and 400 DO with and without 1.4 and not had any probs, except occasionally I have to release and re engage the back button as occasionally it gets out of focus and won't re focus without the button being released and pushed, but this has only happened with the 400 + 1.4x.
George.

Edit, just seen Tug's post and I'd agree with that as well..

Do you mean simply not focussing or having to remove the lens to get it operational again like Ivan?

Bob

I have sussed it.
Is the way I pick up my camera when using heavy telephoto lenses. Sometimes I can inadvertently press the lens release and by doing so, the lens can become slightly disengaged. Hence, removing and re attaching solves the problem.
For a moment, I thought I had a real problem... Sorry to get you guys worried.

Glad you got it sorted.

Thanks for the update Ivan, a lesser man may not have admitted it and left us worrying for no reason, cheers.

Depends which birds, I guess. I'm trying to catch swallows at the moment with a 400mm f5.6 and am having great difficulty. 1/1000 isn't fast enough, but I'm finding 1/4000 is the speed. F5.6 - f8. These are "random" swallows I'm talking about, not pre-planning to shoot where they are nesting, etc. Just close to my house where they are jetting around randomly and in a field behind my friend's house.

They are so fast and unpredictable. You can catch them when they are too far away to get a decent crop, but when they dart between houses or jink across the field, they are so difficult to lock focus on.

In the field scenario I'm using case 6 with all points active, but in the more crowded areas around my house (opposite a harbour) the background is much more busy, so I'm finding that combination less effective. I'd rather use single point with all surrounding ones, but I can't get focused in time before they've gone. Or rather the lens won't focus quickly enough before they disappear behind another rooftop or through a forest of masts.

I'm sure this is no help at all, sorry! I need help more than you I guess! I'll just keep persevering

I know we've touched on this topic before, but my sensor has really picked up a load of dust/grease/oil lately. FoCal is showing it having 400 spots at small apertures. I can only assume this is mirror oil being flicked, but I've tried to clean it with rocket blower, but that makes not a scrap of difference, so I've tried some proprietary swabs and that hasn't done anything either, so it's going to have to go to Canon for cleaning I guess.

But I think most people reporting dirty sensors on the 1D-X had them to start with? They didn't develop? Or has anyone else had this issue?

One more thing whilst I'm in a writing mood ...

I'm using a 24mm TS-E lens with manual focus, and wonder if anyone has used the laser matte focussing screen on the 1D-X? The Ec-S I think?

I understand it's optimised for manual focus on fast lenses (f2.8 or faster) and I wonder if anyone's used one on the 24mm TS-E, which is fixed f3.5

And worse still, how dark it might be on the 400mm f5.6, which is my only other non-f2.8 lens

You don't want to be changing screens in the field, so I just wondered if anyone had used any alternative screens for more accurate manual focus, or do you think the excellent live view magnification is good enough?

Thanks

I'm no one to start silly rumors over nothing. I posted because today it really had me concerned. Luckily, my friend is very observant and pointed me in the right direction.

On a side note... I took a read of past posts to see if it was mentioned. Dear god, the comments I'd made over my first few weeks of ownership... I sound like a little kid in a sweet shop totally overdosed on sugar! :$

I have an EC-S permanently installed in one of my 1Dx's for use with the TS-E and MF Zeiss lenses. It is around 1 stop darker and makes viewing through the 200/2 identical to the 300/2.8 with the regular screen. Swap the bodies and the 2 stop difference in VF light is very obvious.

The 1Dx doesn't have a specific menu option for the EC-S and I find that EC +1/3 or 2/3 is all that's needed in evaluative metering but this will overexpose a little when using spot metering and using the centre AF point.

I also have various split prism screens for macro usage but they're not ideal in other applications as you're forced to have the focus in the centre and the outer areas of the screen are too dark for accurate focussing simply by using the matte effect.

Well, could it have been the red wine, Ivan???

Thanks very much Bob. One stop isn't as extreme as I thought, but maybe I too will wait until I get the 2nd 1DX body to use on the TS-E lenses!

It was common terns that was causing me problems, on the 1Dmk3 I went to ring of fire and away we went.

It's early days I need to get used to it.

Know this is old news but thought would post a link to the new firmware here in the 1DX thread as this is related to the "caution 02" battery issue some of us experienced.

Firmware Version 1.2.4 incorporates the following functional improvements and fixes:
  1. Improves the speed of the camera’s acquisition of focus when using a Speedlite’s AF-assist beam.
  2. Reduces the time it takes to display the metering result on the LCD or Viewfinder when the meter has been activated.
  3. Fixes a phenomenon in which a “Caution 02” message is unnecessarily recorded in the camera status log.
  4. Fixes a phenomenon in which continuous shooting pauses when using a Speedlite.
  5. Fixes a phenomenon, when the GP-E1 is attached, in which the GPS device settings are reset to default settings when the camera has been powered off.
Note:
*This phenomenon occurs only with firmware Ver. 1.2.1.
*After changing the GPS device settings, please be sure to power off the camera before removing the battery. This will ensure that the camera's GPS device settings will be saved.

Did mine and had no issues with it, then again I hadn't experienced any of the problems it is supposed to fix either.

Updated with no issues.

 I was in two minds but thought, they may have other things in there that they aren't telling us about.

Exactly, Iain.

It happens all the time.

I'll certainly update next week.
