Canon 1DX - Official Owners Thread

I wasn't too worried about the battery issue, But today I took the battery from the charger, it had been on charge over night. I put it in the body and checked the level, I found it to be 100% That was at 12:11, I turned the body off and carried on editing. At 12:23 I checked the level again, now down to 94%, Again at 13:10 and now down to 93%. At 13:47 the reading was still at 93%. I've just checked again, 15:29 and the level is 93%.

Ive taken the battery out and put it back in the charger, I'm going to test it again over a couple of hours. The level was down at 59% when I put it on charge last night. When I first received the body I fully charged the battery before the first testing.

I'm going to give the older battery a whirl and see how that performs, As both the chargers have the same specification, I cannot see no reason why each battery cannot be charged in the other charger. I may give this a go later in the week when the new battery needs charging again.

When you say older battery do you mean from a 1D IV?

I thought the battery chargers were different too?
 
Yes I mean the 1DIV. The chargers are identical specification according to the information plate on the bottom of each one.

Well there got to be some difference...
This is stated at the Canon CPN site, under "The EOS-1D X explained":

Enhanced battery

For enhanced power performance, the LP-E4 battery has been redesigned and is named as the LP-E4N.
The inside of the battery now uses a larger number of smaller cells and so the battery capacity has increased from 2300mAh to 2450mAh.
Because many people will have a collection of LP-E4 batteries from their previous EOS-1 series cameras, they have been made both
forwards and backwards compatible, so an LP-E4N can be used in an EOS-1D Mark IV and an LP-E4 can be used in an EOS-1D X.

There is also a new charger to go along with the new LP-E4N and this is the only charger than should be used with the new battery.
If an LP-E4N is charged in an LC-E4 charger you will not fully charge the battery; instead it will only reach around 90% charge so your
capacity is reduced and it will not meet new safety regulations. However, an LP-E4 can be charged in the new battery charger with no problems.

Same here. I have used the 1Dx charger from day 1 and can report no problems with either of my batteries.
 
I have used the new charger and have problems. I am going to check the older mkiv batteries to see if I have the same problems... I hope not !
 
The spec on the base of both chargers are the same ...So I take it there is no difference between the chargers....

So there must be some issue with some of the batteries.

Maybe they are, I'm not disputing that there are two chargers with different names. What I am saying is that both chargers have the exact same specification. I/P Voltage, O/P Voltage Aand Current Rating. Even the O/P power rating is the same. Just because they are called two different names doesn't mean that they are electrically different.

I'd like to think that the charging rate is different, however I doubt it. I hope I am wrong and Canon haven't cut corners by just re-packaging the earlier chargers and calling it something else.


The links you provided dont refer to the MKIV however I know the MK3 batteries are the same.

Just another update, After putting the original battery back on charge last night and fully charging it, I put it back in over night and then switched the body off with lens still attached, this morning the Battery Level is now at 87%.

Even though the different chargers have the same specification doesn't mean that the software used inside is the same...
The new battery is clearly built differently than the older one (as stated by Canon) and by that I'm sure there are different methods to charge the battery.

If you still have problems when following what Canon states in the manuals - call them!
 
Latest update on batteries.....just spoken to Elstree where the initial guy I spoke to checked with someone else....and they are admitting a battery problem with the 1 Dx battery.
I was told there will either be a firmware update or replacements but at the moment just to call back every so often....can't see it being a firmware thing, sounds like a battery problem to me, both mine are behaving in the same slightly erratic way.

I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere else and my local Canon guy didn't know about it on Monday when I saw him.

Just deviating from batteries and heading towards focus screens......

The EC-S screen isn't a supported option when selecting a focus screen type. I popped my EC-S into one of the bodies and then metered various scenes with both bodies and the same lens. I didn't see any difference in the metered EV when I tried various focus points and metering modes.

I can't say for certain that there wont be a specific combination that will cause it to err slightly but I've covered outdoor football and indoor dancing with two bodies (one original FS and one EC-S) and they produce the same results.

I can't tell you any more at the moment - waiting for UPS to deliver it back sometime today. I hope there's some sort of letter telling me what they've done. I've been kept fully informed on the cameras progress via text and e-mail.

As for the sensor - there was a scratch on it. However, there have never been any problems with marks on the final picture.

My two pence worth RE batteries
The one that came with the camera when charged shows up when first inserted back into camera at 98% and doesn't drop even if not used, not overly worried as it will last all day for me, but the new genuine canon one which arrived yesterday after a two week wait shows 100% ?? when fully charged back in the camera
I might be wrong but i recon a firmware fudge will fix this ie the camera will show 100% because i recon that they will tell the camera to show 100% even though the charge capacity will be slightly under fully charged that way everyones camera will show 100% even after a full charge if that makes sense ?

That trick would work with wimmens clothing...........................just label then all size 10 :lol:
 
What is the maximum crop that you consider useable ? Could you post a before and after shot ?

I would imagine that would depend on the required output size.

eg; You could possibly crop down to 10% of the file size if you only want a 6x4 but not if you need an A2
 
Hi,

Just returned from Iceland. Temps of -15C and the 1DX performed faultlessly. Battery gave about 500 shots at this temperature. I tried a 1D Mk2 battery in the camera and it gave approx. the same number of shots. The night time ability of the 1DX is truly awesome - it's ability to reveal detail in the shadows and in faint aurora is better than any other Canon body. It's DR stays almost constant from ISO 100 through to ISO 6400 !!

Hi Bigrob,

I used a 1D Mk4 at for 6 hours at temperatures of -31C in Feb in arctic Sweden without any problems at all. Although it was considerably warmer in Iceland -15C) the 1DX performed brilliantly - it's so good in low you can almost shoot with the lens cap on !!

Hi Looking for some advise please is the 1DX camera used only by the very experienced/professional photographer or can you learn as you use the camera ?? sorry if this in posted in the wrong place...

It pays to know your way around a camera before jumping to the 1Dx. You don't have to be very experienced or a professional.

Think of it this way. If person A, who cant drive, buys a Ferrari, they will learn how to drive but will take a long time to get the very best out of it. If person B, who can drive, buys a Ferrari, they stand a much better chance of getting the best out of it and drive it to the best of their ability much quicker and without getting frustrated that they keep stalling it.
