Canon 1DX - Official Owners Thread

Folks have a read around before you update a few people are not quite happy with AF points illuminated!

Right, I would like, when the update becomes available, for someone to stack a 300mm 2.8 mk1, a 2x mk3 and a 1.4x mk 2 all together and tell me if it autofocuses...!!

I've just realised that you mention a 2xMkIII, George. You can't stack a MkIII converter onto anything.....hence why I also kept my 2xMkII.

The combination of MkII converters and 300/2.8 does AF although it's not the best if speed is required. The 600/2 and 2x works well...pretty much as the 1DMkIV performed with this combination.

I didn't shoot it but I was at a night cycle race recently and thought about how impossible it would have been on the 1Dx with no illuminated af point trying to follow a fast moving cyclist in the dark. :bonk: Now these night/dim light sports will be so good with the 1Dx.

No camera would cope with shooting cycling in the dark, well not yet, it's quite easy to get around, pre focus on a point and wait for the cyclists front wheel to hit the mark.

The 1DX is the best camera I've ever used, files have a wonderful depth to them, AF is near perfect, speed is something else, files are clean at high ISO, but it won't do it for you, sometimes the photographer has to take responsibility.
I still wonder how I ever made a penny shooting sport, manual focus, pushing TRI-X to 3200.

Does this work for anyone?

I use a mac, and there is no 1.1.1 firmware available/shown if you enter OSX Mountain Lion, but if you were using Windows 7 for example, the firmware is there.

Not sure I really understand it - doesn't seem right not being able to update from a mac.

Anyhoo my 1DX arrives tomorrow, as long as Mr Fedex doesn't get lost, so I'll have plenty to keep me occupied beforehand I guess

Yes there is no download for 10.8 for some reason.

Yes, Paul, and I was told by Frankie Jim at the Canon show in Islington last November that it would never be possible and he explained at some length why that was so...

incidentally, may be coming through Glencoe next week, are you about?

George

I suspect Canon Bob got it right when he said it was the delay in bringing it to market was so they could fit some new hardware (AF sensors) after the number of complaints.

I should be about next week on most days, it would be good to meet up and catch up. I shall PM you my details, we live North of the Ballachulish bridge.

Can somebody tell me if the AF point on a 1DX lights up red when focus is achieved?

I suspect that statement may well have been accurate and based on the hardware in the prototype/pre-production bodies.
The weight of negative reviews could possibly caused Canon to re-think and alter the angles of the AF sensor pairs...hence the release date delays. Finding the correct algorithms for the focus control would then add more delays but the bodies could be shipped with firmware to follow.

Bob

I thought the many delays were because Canon were actually making some hardware changes to enable the f/8 autofocus, I was quite surprised and disappointed when it came out it and did not. I think your suggestion is probably as close to the truth as we are going to get Bob. It makes a lot of sense that they would do the necessary hardware designs and incorporate them into production and spend time getting developing the algorithms and firmware at leisure. This does seem to fit the fact that this F/W followed the v1.06 very closely.

This update took even longer than the last to update, almost 91/2minutes with the obligatory long wait around 23%. I had to attempt it twice as it came up with a message to change the card and try again. I downloaded the file again and used another card and all went well. Not sure if it was the card or the file at fault. The file size was correct so maybe the card was at fault.

Ah, OK, Bob, thanks, then if we try the 2x mk 2 and the 1.4 mk 3 will that work?

I seem to remember that there was some way to use one of the new TCs to stack with an old one!!

George.

OK, Paul, I'll look forward to that, it may be that I'm coming down via Glencoe next Sat ie 27th, but I'll give you a ring when I get your details!!

Best, George.

.

This was shot with canon 1dmkIV + 1.4 + x2 ... focus jumped all over place but then settled... this is a 100% crop straight out the camer.. so no resize no work.. its the entire width of a large cricket field

400_x14_x2.jpg

What lens did you use, Tony?

sorry silly me.. a 400mm f2.8

Mmm, interesting, seems it works then? Not sure what you mean by whole width of a cricket pitch...you mean right across it?..

Same with the 300/2.8, Tony, but fine with the 600/4 and 2x.

Bob

Bob, going back to my previous question, can you stack a mk3 1.4 with a mk 2 2x?....sold both of my mk 2's ...

George.

Ah, ok, wasn't sure if it was a mk2 and a mk 3.....

In short, George, a 2xII is the only extender that will fit onto the front of another extender....1.4xII or the MkIII's

Thanks, Bob, that clarifies everything, I'll have to steal a mk 2 2X and do a few trials!!

On a separate issue, my GGS 5 D3 screen protector arrived yesterday and it's a perfect fit for the 1 Dx (except mine was damaged and they are sending a replacement)

This is the link to the site

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=251054051918&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:US:1123

although the delivery takes about 3 weeks.

Thanks for the link to the GGS protector site on Ebay George, I have now ordered one to replace the plastic film one I bought.

Good to chat today.

Likewise, Paul, hope to catch up next Saturday!!

I think you need to get one with at least the same speed as card1 otherwise the camera will transfer at the slowest card speed.....................I think.

Finally got around to looking for backup card..and cheaper alternatives for 32GB are around 50 quid.. any cheaper and I would wonder if the speed given is speed achieved.. so 50 quid seems to be the average...however I have seen 60mb/s 32gb sandisk for 70 quid.. may as well get same make and top speed of my other cards for the sake of 20 quid..

unless anyone can think of other options?

just downloading the 1.1.1 firmware update for the red thingy :) wish me luck.. anyone else?

takes about 9 minutes.. long wait..

got to say the jury is out on this one.. guess using in real conditions will tell.. right now its like the whole screen is flashing red and i dont have it on bright..

it flashes when you press back focus ok and it flashes when you move it.. but stops after a couple of seconds.. any touch of buttons and its back flashing..

its certainly not a 100% fix .. but presume will be better

Some Mac versions have been there since I first looked.

There isn't one for the 10.8 for some reason.

It isn't mac version specific as you just copy the .fir file to a CF card!
The latest version of EOS Utility 2.12.0, also runs fine on 10.8.

Yes, so why not list it as being available for the 10.8 version? A download is only available for 10.7, 10.6 and 10.5 I think it is.

There is no need to list every version of OSX, just like they don't need to list all the Windows versions. As long as your machine will run eosutil that is all that matters, and the latest version does.

If you do not select an operating system and version, you do not even see the firmware download links to download them. This is for Windows and Mac.

If someone thought they were doing the correct thing and selecting the OS version that they actually used then they would not see a new firmware version to download. It is a strange way to do it.
