Temperature, humidity and other environmental factors affect AF. I do my AFMA on site (on the fly). I pick a static object and fine tune the AF until It is pin sharp.

Robin, how do you find Focal, I am awaiting the Mac version promised any day now, but feedback appreciated....thanks.

Blimey do these things affect focus that much? I am quite surprised, I must say. Perhaps it's been a case of ignorance is bliss for me :bonk:.

What degree of adjustment do you find yourself having to dial in on a day to day basis?

Ive got a 600mm that takes pretty sharp photos (to my eye), but do you think this could this be improved if I carried out AFMA on site as you do?
 
no adjustments here in any conditions and no problems.. all sounds a bit strange to me...

I appreciate that this was aimed at Robin but I'll chime in whilst you wait....

An excellent utility IMHO. I've used it on my 1D4's and the Ds3 and seen some very noticeable improvements George.


A separate 1Dx question.....
I used my 1D4's on high burst rate but was quite adept at firing off a single shot by gently stroking the shutter button. I'm struggling with this on the 1Dx and and frequently get an extra shot (or two). I know there's a little increase in the burst rate but wonder if the 1Dx plays "catch up" whereas the 1D4 didn't?

However I ahve another problem.. only slight but annoying and on a simmilar theme..

To use BBF I hvae to assign the shutter button to one of three things.. the only sensible ones seems to be exposure lock... The problem is I am slightly touching the shutter button before shooting and thus locking the exposue....
 
As per Bob - I have found Focal to be very good (but need to check the results re the 200 and the 2x extender).

It was a very hazy day when I took the football ones mind, but I still expected better, so need to investigate.

I thought you shot mainly in manual mode, I may be wrong (and usually am), so that wouldn't affect anything would it?

Well if you are shooting in 40C the lens can get quite hot and you know what heat does to things... that's right EXpansion. This can mess about with AF accuracy. Same goes for extreme cold but of course you will be dealing with contraction.

Is not just extreme temperatures that can create small deviations in AF accuracy. If you are shooting in the sun with no shade, lenses/camera can get quite hot in just 20C. Again this can have an adverse effect for critical work. Same goes for cold weather.

Now, I have all my lenses calibrated to body so, Most of the time. it is +/- 2 to 3 (after a few hours in 40C + heat, It can go as high as +/- 10).
Normally I shoot with no AFMA and images are sharp but, for critical work where I need to be sure camera lens combo performs at its best, I always perform AFMA on site as needed.
 
I k now these are web images but they were very dull and I have wacked up the sharpening.

Only shoot manual indoors under steady light.. outdoors I prefer Av mode..


The only reason it would be "mostly" manual would be if i am "mostly" indoors :)
 
Thanks, Bob and Robin, been waiting months for the Mac version (I know I could run parallels etc but really don't want or need Windows) told it'd be out soon, still waiting!!

Perhaps my finger is a little slower than yours Tony....I'll practice more.

As for your second comment about AE lock......what AF mode are you using? IIRC, AE lock on the shutter button is inactive if you're using AIServo or partial/spot metering.....it will always meter immediately prior to the shot being taken. If you're using One Shot AF or Evaluative metering then I can see why you've got a problem.

Some pics. Festival in the rain was tough but I am incredibly happy with how the body performed (I really hated having the 1diii there and not another DX) 400 also got some use from front of house.

Well Tony, if you're not using One Shot then I don't believe you can be locking exposure with the shutter button. I can't see anything to say that the 1Dx is different from previous bodies in this respect.

Those that have had lenses calibrated to the body do you remember how much canon charged? I might have a couple of lenses I want it doing on as they will be primarily used on this body and as theyre a bit old I want them serviced anyway.

Suspect they'd throw that in with the service, why not give them a call?

On reflection, if you've just bought a new body, tell them you've a possible focus issue with it with some lenses and they may well set it up for free!!

Worked for me, Ryan...and I think you've just bought a new camera....might have been better if you'd gone top of the range, however....:lol::lol:

Lens calibration to body is £90.
But, as suggested, you may want to give the old "It worked fine with my other body" a go. I live 5 min away from Elstree service center. Let me know when you take them If you want to meet up for a quick beverage (not Thursday the 6th as I am out all day). ;)

Once the firmware was announced it made the decision easy for me... i couldnt afford problems... now I am soooo happy.. its briliant :)

Pucka George, the owner wants a "big white" and has to sell the 1Dx to fund it. New on July 4th, 6500 clicks and 5800 Euros to secure it.
We don't have thieves in France :p

Guys, make sure to switch the camera off before you put it in a bag... Just found 1500 black shots in my card ;(

I deleted them but good idea!... I am sure it would :help: those undecided souls that populate the 1Dx thread with incredibly insightful and well thought out questions... Like.. "If I put my eye on the viewfinder... will I be able to frame the picture?".... :thinking:... No mate, you will need a carpenter for that ... or go to IKEA and buy one. :lol: :bonk: :nuts:
