Canon 1DX - Official Owners Thread

If you do a search on here you will find a few posts about them. You generally end up paying far more than the list price (+duty, +vat, etc etc)

See my new thread for firmware fix just out........look forward to hearing from you lads with them prior to my order...!!!

George.

I came to this thread to let everyone know after I got an email from Frankie saying the new firmware is out. You beat me to it George!

It says it has addressed most of the problems we have heard about or experienced plus a few more.

That's what comes from looking at my laptop on the Isle of Raasay while in bed!!:D

I was doing the same on my iPad, now I shall have to get up and do the update.

I hope the rain and wind is not as bad as it is here in Lochaber. Enjoy the stay in Raasay George.

Yup, scruffy morning, been up most of the summer this year and feel sorry for everyone else in the UK, we've had a drought up here!!....but we digress from the thread and Marcel will be on the lookout for transgressions :nono:....

bank holiday weekend slowed everything down... am going to bank this morning to transfer my money over to KERSO who will send my body out on wed.. so hopefully thurs here... first job update firmware then away we go :)

Firmware now updated. It seemed to take longer than normal on a 1D body, around 7 or 8 minutes and it stuck for a long time at 23%, which was a bit worrying, before jumping up to 40%... :gag:.
Battery started at 79% and finished at 66% for anyone who may be a little unsure whether to use a battery that is not fully charged.

I think you are going to enjoy this camera Tony... the exposure lock and hold is a feature that is really useful; I did not know it existed till I saw it on Canons site.

Mine stuck at 23% for an eon too.....a little bead of sweat formed on my brow :(

It does say 7 mins in the blurb :)

Firmware Version 1.0.6 incorporates the following fixes.

Fixes a phenomenon in which the AF Microadjustment cannot be correctly carried out.

Fixes a phenomenon such that when using the camera with combinations of certain lens *1) and extender *2) the images captured become back-focused.*1) EF 70-200m f/2.8L IS II USM or EF200mm f/2L IS USM When used with *2) Extender EF 1.4x III or Extender EF 2x III

Fixes a phenomenon in which, when the camera is powered on in very dark environments (including instances when the lens cap or the body cap is attached), Error 80 appears on the camera.

Fixes the following phenomenon: if two CF cards are inserted into the camera and the "Standard" or "Auto switch card" settings is selected for the recording method for [Record func+card/folder sel.], and then one of the CF cards is removed and then reinserted into the card slot, the card selected for recording and playing back images may be switched to the other CF Card.

Fixes a phenomenon in which the AF microadjustment value is not correctly displayed in the EXIF information of the images captured.

Displays a "O" or "X" result to indicate whether images have been successfully transferred through the FTP protocol when using the FTP protocol when using the WFT-E6 Wireless File Transmitter.

* The firmware update takes approximately seven minutes.

Indeed it does, Tony. It counted nicely from 1% to 23% and then sat there looking dumb before leaping to 40% and carrying on with its count.

At last some good news for you Tony, it seems ages ago when you first mentioned the 1DX lol.

I am seriously envious and wish I could both justify and afford the camera because it really does look like it is the pooches hairy bits.

I'm glad that Canon got a firmware update out so promptly, I dare say there will be at least one more before the year is out.

I'm looking forward to reading your comments on the 1DX so don't leave it too long eh?! :D

Doesn't mention the Spot Meter. Do you think they know fully what the problem was? ;)

Hopefully this will fix the main Err 80 problem, and by the looks of it, one or two other things that I hadn't seen mentioned. Who'll be the first to update and try to replicate, hopefully unsuccessfully, the problem.

Btw, I wouldn't be doing firmware updates with anything other than a fully charged battery. ;)

Oh no this firmware fix is really not good news. Means an order from me is ever more likely. Poop poor wallet.

I have jobs lined up straight away.. I have a dim dark boxing gym around the corner from me.. usually on f2 iso 6400 so that will be a proper test.. same day as i get the camera... two games under very poor floodlights (not league) next week..

Mines going to get instant high iso testing straight away :)

So Kerso's warranty is fine then? Right if/when I get one he's getting my money for sure. :)

Lol Andy. You are becoming almost legendary with your kit purchases, swaps etc! I would hate to be your Visa card which will no doubt be as battered as mine!

Will you be sticking with the 1DX long term or can we expect you to do another system swap before this year is out lol. :D

Will update firmware and test in the same dark club with the same 1.2 glass this weekend on spot and partial metering.

If it's dark and gloomy just don't drop it from on high onto a concrete floor.

Hahaha :D Hopefully I can become known for my images as well as indecisiveness!

Maybe I should have kept all the camera I have owned and set up a camera museum. Might have been more profitable than selling images....... :bonk:

I've updated one body and the problem has gone so it looks promising.

A very valid point but I have a very strong feeling that it's a "done deal"! :D

I think I have more chance of winning the lottery than him finally deciding and making a purchase.

It's looking that way yes.

Now the big problem though is what lenses. Having sold off all my L glass before I'm starting from scratch.

I'm thinking at the moment maybe

24-105
50 f.12
70-200

On the issue of the 70-200 I have owned the ISmkII and know how good it is but I am wondering if given the excellent high ISO on the 1Dx that maybe I could go with the f2.8 non-IS. Might be a false economy but the non-IS and the 24-105 are about the same price as the 70-200 mkII if bought from Kerso.
The 50 f1.2 looks outstanding but pricey. The f1.4 is maybe an option though?

I think I will ultimately get a 400 f2.8 for sports but at the moment I don't earn enough from that to justify the costs. Maybe sometime next year when I have got back into the swing of things I will look at it. I think for now the 70-200 and a 1.4 or 2x converter will suffice.

That little lot should cost up to around £8K. Oh dear.....:D

PS - Sorry for the thread hijacking.

I have a 1Dx for a few days and managed to get some shots tonight at my son's pre-season training match.

Started off in bright sun using Evaluative metering, Case 4, and Focus Point plus 8 expansion points.

The tracking to me seemed pretty insane. Haven't tried all 61 points.

I should have been sitting for a better angle but wanted to walk round a bit.

Second half I was shooting in to a very low sun and it got pretty dark at the end.
