Canon 1DX - Official Owners Thread

I spoke with them today Tony....they will ship to the UK and also supply VAT free if supplied with a UK VAT number and payment using BACS transfer. They're 100% kosher too...they have 5 High Street stores in three cities.

Bob

Cheers for that :)

I have spoken to kerso and he can offer same price/ish ... a little worried that his are US warranty so have sent another email to CPS... If they say OK then going wiht KERSO .. if not then going french as he already said there OK

Would welcome your help actually ordering if I go french :) its one or the other as soon as i hear back from cps..

Funny this.. I also sent my 1Dx to be matched with the lenses and only just now have read the report... It says: "Error 80... lens used maybe the cause. Errr... I don't think so Canon! I know now for fact it is related to spot/partial metering and very dark conditions. Somehow I am not convinced the next firmware will fix it.

Certainly will Tony.

As far as I'm aware Canon have always honoured warranty on Kerso's bodies and I doubt there's been a change.

Indeed that's the case, Bob, Canon UK have a reciprocal agreement with Canon US to repair each other's bodies.

My preference for the French route is that I can claim back the VAT, whereas Kerso isn't VAT registered so there is no VAT to reclaim, but he in no way is doing anything wrong, it's just that he works in a different way.

Also thanks to Bob for all his help on this!!

George.

I asked Frankie about the err 80 and just got this reply....

Hi George,

Canon has already confirmed the phenomenon that you are reporting. Due to the control mechanism related
to the camera’s AE, when the power of the camera is turned on in very dark environments, this
phenomenon may occur.
We are planning to provide countermeasures for this phenomenon by changing the camera’s firmware.
Once the preparations for the new firmware are complete, we will announce it on our Web site.

Kind Regards,

Frankie

So there!!!

Excellent news.

For now turn the camera on whilst there is still light around ;)

titter titter

That's good news. Thanks for posting George. :)

Is this the ONLY issue any of you have had with the 1Dx? I'm probably being over cautious but could there be other serious errors that might crop up?

The other issue is it's price....:lol::bang:

Some have had issues with lenses not being remembered once all the pain in the arse mfa work has been done.
I can't comment as I've not done any mfa work

This would seem to be an issue of serial number recognition rather than lost calibration value. My understanding is that the body displays 0 after a power cycle but actually uses the chosen value....the 1Dx AFMA has ceased to be FL catalogued and is now serial number based.....good if you've got multiple lenses at the same FL.

Bob

Is it still possible to get hold of the 24-70 f2.8 mkI new? It would be a much used lens for me and having bought 3 in the past with only one being really sharp I am wary about buying one used. At least Nikon still do their 24-70 albeit at a hefty £1200 - £80 cashback if I get a UK D4.

Certainly will Tony.

unfortunatly my canon CPS rep isnt as positive as everyone else :( I asked about kerso and the us warranty and he said..

"Your safest bet is to buy from a EOS Pro Centre www.canon.co.uk/eospro-network"

Interesting. If a Kerso purchased 1Dx cannot be sorted under warranty then that would probably sway my decision to the Nikon.

To be fair he doesnt say it wont be.. but from a direct question..spelt out nice and clear.. he doesnt say it will.. and at 5k its enough to swing the decision for me..

I will add.. I love dealing with kerso.. have done many times and spent more than this.. i will spend much more wiht him i guess... AND I know he would honour the guarantee and sort any problems... But i need to know i can get a 3 day turnaround fix and from the CPS it doesnt look brillliant..

Exactly my thoughts too Tony. At £5K I just don't want to have any worries at the back of my mind should anything go wrong.

I too should add that if my post reads like a negative comment on Kerso then it certainly isn't meant to be. I too have spent quite a large amount with him and always received excellent service.

It's probably a good idea to get Ian's comment on this one. His website states;
"Canon products have a 1 year Canon USA warranty valid in all of Europe with UK invoice provided"

Bob

I had no issues when I sent my 1DmkIV to Canon which I had purchased from Kerso last year. It was only calibration though so I can't comment on actual repairs.

I am going wiht Kerso ... :)

ave emailed him with definite order if he has one available.. he did have yesterday

I've bought both from Ian and Canon US and not had any prob getting warranty repairs done at Elstree. Don't worry about it, go for the best price!!

As with any electronic device, errors can crop up under certain conditions. No amount of testing can find every error that could conceivably occur.

New firmware is usually released to fix known errors after they have been discovered (as well as adding functionality). Just like the OS on your computer, fixes/updates released all the time.

Thankfully camera firmware doesn't need to be updated as often as your computer.

Until Microsoft starts making cameras that is..

Saw this link over at POTN & couldn't see that it had been posted here.

Kai at DigitalRev reviewing the 1Dx against the D4. I like his humour.

He obviously didn't use partial or spot towards the end on the 1Dx though ;)

The 1Dx will focus at f/8 in live view. Tried it with a 600mm and 2x converter. Not ideal (and not servo) but for static subjects like distant naked famous people bathing in the sun, it will do the trick

So it won't work in Vegas hotel rooms??:exit:

It's time to put a quick snap on the page just to add a little colour.
Taken last night....200mm @ f/2 1/320 and Iso 8000. The crop is about 40% of the original frame and was lit by flames!

Impressive shot Bob. ISO8000 and quite a bit of cropping!

Has anyone heard anything from Kerso over the warranty issue? If the error80 thing can't be fixed with firmware then a repair is kind of inevitable so it would be reassuring to know. Kerso purchased bodies in the past have been repaired under warranty without issues so unless something has changed I can't see why it would be different now.

Very impressive Bob. I take it you are enjoying your new lens as well as the 1DX.

It is an impressive beast Andy. Iso 8000 in bright conditions is perhaps taken for granted nowadays but the clarity in dark environments is where it really stands out

I am indeed Vaughan. This kind of shot would have been the 1D4 and 135/2 but the 200/2 makes up for the loss of crop factor quite nicely....and it focusses very quickly for a big lens. The 1Dx focus tracking is impressive in the dark too.

Bob

Here's some more colour for the thread

Were you hand holding the 200/2 Bob?

LOL B0b - a bit like the girl in this video..

Exactement mon ami.

Strangely, it occurred to me (whilst watching that video) why AF sensors will also focus on horizontal features....or is that just an urban myth

Bob

Well my eyes focus on bouncing features....

Dont know if anyone is interested but just had a look at SLR hut who have the 1DX in stock for £4780 with a uk shop and a uk phone no, maybe grey imports but i could wrong

If you mean the address in the 'contact us' section then it is not a shop, it is a mail box company address.

I tested the weather sealing this weekend, anyone around clapham can vouch for just how hard it came down.

The only issue I had was fogging on the lens (going from cold and wet outdoor stage into hot and sweaty tent)

No er.80 all weekend and a combined total of about 30+ hours shooting.

There is an er. Though my broken body. I'm knackered.
