Guys,

Just after a bit of advice quickly....been offered a 2nd hand 1DS with just over 9500 clicks for £1200.
I have to let the guy know within the hour if I want it as he has another buying waiting..so would you go for it at that price?

a 1ds is old.. you could get a decent 1dmkII for a lot less or a 1dmkiiN for simmilar... do you need an s?

depends what its used for i suppose... if your at the buying stage then you presumably know what you want :)
 
As long as you know and trust the guy, I would say......

Get a Nikon :D

So if you were choosing between a good MKII or a mint 1DS for similar prices what would you go for?
 
The 1d MK ?? "s" are a better more expensive camera.. But of no use for me as a sports photographer.. hence why i say depends on what your using it for :)

I just bought a 1dmkIII for 2.5k .... a 1dmkIIIs would be about 5k ... yet I wouldnt want the s version .
 
if you don't need full frame, i'd get a mk2. if you do need full frame, then maybe the 1ds. it is pretty old now though.....
 
its the fps for me.. too slow on the s series.. I believe its fantastic for weddings, portraits, landscapes and loads more.. not for sport
 
1Ds "classic" is pretty poor on battery life.

For that kind of money I bought a 1D MK IIN with only 9K Actuations.

Keep an eye out on MPB or Filter Fantastic for prices.

My advice would be to buy a nice 1D MK 2 N for the money - larger screen is nice and the JPG options are cool however the main benefit is being able to use a CF & SD card at the same time.

I often either shoot to both cards in case of card failure I have an exact copy - or you can shoot JPG to one and RAW to the other at the same time. Or just press two buttons and you can shoot to the 2nd card when number one is full.

1D cameras are amazing - the Classic 1D's are getting a tad old now. Still a great camera but the extra mp did not swing it for me compared to poor battery performance.

As for 8.5 FPS and the autofocus system - in one word:

Wow.

The Mk II doesn't really stack up against the original Ds, they are pretty different tools.

If it's a case of this camera or a newer something, then the 5D is one to be looking at as the alternative. The 1Ds does have something really special about it, despite the old style small screen and comparatively poor high ISO performance.
 
I have not gone through with it.
I have seen a 1D MKII N on Filter Fantastic as suggested and its £1279 so thinking this may be a better option.

Gonna call them now to see whats included in the price :)

I wish I was on commission :D

I like using the likes of MPB & Filter Fantastic as you can return it if you are not 100% happy. Also you get a 90 - 100 day warranty just in case.

Prices are pretty good also :D
 
Damn..they closed at 4pm and I rang just after!!!

Will try and get them in the morning before the close at midday, will tell them you put a word in so you can ask for discount nex time :p

If you are looking for a specific camera there is a button on MPB's website to let them know what you are looking for.

I used it...............

And had a 1Ds MKII within a couple of days. :-D

just for the record - "the well used one" (no offence taken kipax :D) has 7920 shots only on the clock, although the outside is a little warn - and yes i can prove it.

i think £1200 is a little overpriced for a 1ds

The 1d 1ds and 1dmk2n are all different beasts with different uses (i have all three) and there are things the 1d does well that the 1dmk2 does not (1/500th flash shutter and 1/16,000 shutter max) the 1ds will create the best quality pictures by far (upto 400iso) way better then the 1dmk2n. at 800iso and above the 1dmk2n is far better and the interface and battery life are better (cmos chip rather then ccd). pixel for pixel the 1d creates a cleaner image, but it only has 4mp so this limits crops.


the poor battery life of ccd cameras can be addressed by using third party batteries which are 2200mAh (and around £10-15 each) instead of the original 1600mAh canon ones supplied with the camera which cost £50...
 
hehe sorry mate I was going by your own description... when you put had it years and has usual wear and tear.... that description = well used to me ... :) wouldnt it to anyone? oops :)

Ok so based on all of this, what would you go for then? You have give the good and bad for them all so if you were picking one that would cover all bases what would be your pick??

if you want a "jack of all trades" then the 40d - no offence to any owners it is designed to be an all round camera (which it does well)- canon designed the 1d and 1ds for two separate markets and they do their area very well, but they are specialist cameras (in my view)

portrait- studio - wildlife 1ds (mk123 etc)
sport -news action 1d (mk123 etc)

best value (quality vs cost) for sport - 1dmk2 (non n) - maybe £800

I love using the 1ds and many of the photos on my walls are from this camera (wildlife) but this is not what we make money from and what sells so we are upgrading to 3 1dmk 2n's - we have two and hopefully we will have our third this weekend my wife and i both take photos at events and i often use two cameras (we need a spare anyway)

what are you planning on doing with it is the big question? if you want to do sports & moving wildlife, you really need to be looking at the 1Dmk2 or mk2n or a mk3. any of the 3 versions of the ds don't have the frame rate for it. i think the 1ds mk3 does 5fps? still not really enough.

if it's portraiture, studio work, landscape work etc. etc. then a 1ds or possibly a 5d might be the way forward for you.

unless you want 2 bodies to do different things, you need to decide what suits your needs most. i have a mint 1Dsmk2 that i payed less than 1900 for, so 1200 for a mk1 version seems a bit on the high side for me.

before i got my 1dsmk2, i used the 1Dmk3 for landscapes and portraiture etc. etc. and i was very happy with it in these applications. ok the wide lenses aren't super wide, but they were still wide enough.......

what do you want it for?

IMHO, for wildlife, the Canon 1D III is the only realistic way to go, if using with pro glass. IIRC, it has a frame rate of 10 fps and the AF tracking is better than say a 40D...
 
Ok now my head hurts!!!

Listening to what you have all said I think the MKIIN is the one to go for. I have emailed Filter Fantastic and MPB to see what they can get for my price range.

£1500 and I mean mint condition.
Or a 1DSMKII with around 4000 actions in mint condition for £3400.
 
Thanks for the offer but the most I can do is £1250 as I need to get some good glass too.
I havent said that by the way to get you to come down in price, its just what I have. I have budgeted this amount based on second hand prices I have seen.

I'd be interested to know which of the Mk II's give the better ISO performance. I'm getting a miffed with the lighting conditions we're currently getting with this weather, and my 40D isn't particularly great at 1600 ISO.

My head tells me that the MkII "S" should be better because of the full frame sensor. Is this a correct assumption ?

i would suspect the mk2 s, however it's not that simple due to the falling prices of the mk3 - the 1dmk3 it may well be better in low light then the mk2s for a similar price - but with lower resolution :shrug:
 
HELLO, well after my recent experience of buying a second hand camera,off this site, with only, supposed 7000 clicks. i will not bother again and start looking at the shops again.

anybody got any suggestions on how to solve the ERR 99 problem on a 20d body.
nothing to do with lens, no lens attached, just keeps clicking and ERR 99 on lcd. took battery out, left for hours, refitted battery, no joy.

don't let me put you off buying off here, but pay a bit more from a shop and get peace of mind.

1D Mk II is definitely better than the 1Ds Mk II at high ISO - presumably because of the larger pixels but I reckon a 40D pips them all. It is the biggest improvement in the latest generation of cameras.

I'm not sure why people are so keen on the N versions of the 1DII. They are about £300 to £400 more and offer no difference in AF or sensor, just picture styles and a different screen...

Im sure loads of people have had good and bad experiences buying on here, I suppose we just have to take the chance when buying second hand.

With regards to the ERR99 I am guessing its a shutter problem as I had a 400D do exactly the same. Cost £160 to get it replaced and it worked fine.
