I can't answer on which cameras better, but i can say your friend doesn't know what he's talking about.

21pix too much for any lens? Nonsense, you can't have too many pix for a lens.

Assuming it's the original 1DS, then that's quite an old camera. I would go for the newer camera. Also, you need to handle both cameras to see which is more comfortable and easier for you to use. The 1DS cameras are quite a bit larger and heavier than the 5D series.

For landscape then ANY of the 1ds or 5 ranges will serve you well from an image quality perspective.

So the choice is down to the other factors involved - basically look at the differences of the 1 series verses the 5 series - things like weather sealing, size, handling and so forth. A 5 with a grip is pretty much the same size, weight and handling as a 1. Some people don't like the earlier 1 series multiple button press style of control, some see it as a useful thing for not changing things accidentally......

I have both a 5D classic and a 5D Mk2 - the 2 was purchased for the liveview functions to support the type of focussing I want to do for large depth of field landscape pics - but having seen A3 pics from both then the difference in image quality is negligible as far as resolution goes - but the Mk2 beats the earlier one by a bit for colour rendition.....

1DsII is the min IMHO, mk1 was their first FF from 2003 and wasn't that well refined. Overall 1DsII will beat 5DII, mainly in build quality and focusing, with similar IQ.
21MP is quite easy to make use of with most decent lenses, unless you only ever shoot at f/16-22 where 12 is probably enough. 21MP on crop is a different story, and that is frankly a marketing nonsense (or only under f/5.6).

You might be able to buy 5D2 new but the newest 1Ds will be about 7-8 years old and with years of use/abuse behind it....so for dependability the 5 wins.

Also my other half uses the 24-105 with her 5D2 - a combination she loves.
