Thinking of getting the Canon 1DMK111 next week as a 3rd 1 series body. I have a Canon 1DMK11N and the 1DSMK11, but have Canon fixed the focus problems with the MK111 or are they still faulty ?. I dont want to get one and then have to send it for a fix as soon as I get it.

Personally, in your position i wouldnt buy a mkIII, i dont think there is a big enough improvement to consider it above a mkIIn... mainly because it doesnt use the np-e3 batteries that both your other bodies use. Having to carry 2 types of spare battery rather than 1 is extra weight.

Thats one reason I didnt get one when they came out, but I need a third 1 series body now and thats the only option. The better ISO performence is whats making me want one, but I dont want to have to send it back if the focus problem are still an issue.

I'm not sure I agree with Darren, although he makes a fair point about the different batteries.

The Mk3 has had some bad publicity and Canon have certainly shot themselves in the foot with this model. The fact is though that for every person who complains about the AF system there's another who's had no issues with it.

I can see the difference that twin Digic 3 processors makes just in the colour, smoothness and low noise of images I've seen taken with it. I think it's a significant improvement, and the fact that I wont be getting one is just down to the fact that the 1.3 sensor is a halfway house which doesn't work for me most of the time.

Whether the focus problems are fixed I'm not sure, but Canon claim to have a complete fix I understand, so I wouldn't let it stop me getting one.

I would say no, the value of them has dropped through the floor whilst the IIn have held their value well, Canon are saying that all is well with the cameras now but thay said that at the start didn't they?
A lot of pros will not touch them - there must be a good reason...

The spare battery issue really only comes into it if you are shooting thousands of shots a day, i havent charged my mk3 battery for over a month, have taken over a 1000 shots with it in that time, and its still showing 75% charge.

I do have a spare battery, and they are a lot smaller than the NP-E3 batts too.

I still have not noticed a problem with my AF, most of the issues i have encountered have been created by me. At the end of the day it depends what you shoot, the issues only occur in very bright sunlight with poor contrast, in AI servo, One Shot has never been an issue ! And the performance of the AF in poor light and conditions is astonishing!

The battery issue is no probs a spare would only take up a bit of room anyway.
It's just the focus issue I am botherd about, and if the ISO is much better.
Or would I be better off waiting to see what new Canon camera comes out, if there is one soon.

I've not really looked into this as it's not a camera that I'd be looking to get but I have had a few chats with users of this beastie that don't tell the common story at all.

From what I've heard from people using these out in the dessert and bush on shoots, there isn't and hasn't ever been a focus problem with the mk 3.

The problem was "apparently" with the very complicated nature of the focus setup options and the fact that it wasn't really ready to go out of the box. Lots of snappers didn't read the manual (surely not??) or perform the setup for their use and just expected to take the camera out on a job and have it work. When it didn't, the swell of voices saying it was broke got so loud that canon gave up explaining, changed the standard firmware to more "lowest common denominator" stance and said it's fixed.

Take that as you will, all I can say is it's from working snappers that were very happy with the mk3 from the outset.

Curiously, Andy Rouse howled down all suggestions initially that there was anything wrong at all with the 1DMK3, but has now gone to saying it's totally unreliable. He's also gone on record as saying he's not convinced the focus issues are fixed in the 1DSMK3 either. This is a guy though who seems to be looking for any excuse now to swap over to Nikon. ;)

Give a dog a bad name. I'd be very wary of believing all you read.

I know a few pros that are switching to Nikon, especially as nikon professional services are doing a deal for pro togs switching. I recently saw that Andy Rouse, who has been a canon user for quite some time, made the switch at his own expense.

I also know a few that are just going back to their mk11/n's and for most editorial stuff the file size is more the enough. My advice, is to either wait, or search for a good 11n model.

i must add, one big reason for making the switch is picture quality.

Hmmmm, Andy Rouse is possibly the most mercinary snapper of us all and will happily prostitute himself to the biggest sponsorship ££'s it seems.

Or to put it another way, he's as good a businessman as he is he a snapper. :)

Never trust a person who is being paid by a retail outlet to review products they sell.

Personally having used q few diffrent 1dmk3 bodies both pre fix and post fix, I wouldnt touch one with a barge pole, the AF is still unreliable, i would go as far as to say about 60-70% are good, i have being using 600 f4, 400 f2.8, 300 f2.8, 70-200 f2.8.
using a mk2n 95% of my shots are spot on.

I have been using a Nikon D3 as part of a contract I have and its very nice, but I dont think it will temp me to change.

Thanks for the tips good or bad.
I think I will stick with my 1DMK11N and 1DSMK11 and my trusty 20D for now then.
Lets just hope Canon bring out a new camera soon, or it's Nikon here I come.

Why?

Seems you have all the options sewn up with those three bodies.
