Canon 1D X Mk II Owners Thread

No it doesn't......the charger only charges one at a time and when the 1st is charging the 2nd will show one green bar.

When the 1st is fully charged, it'll show 3 greens and the 2nd battery will charge......but it takes a while.

Understood - thank-you George! (y)

This also explains why I thought the spare battery was fully charged, but it wasn't.

John, you'll love the performance of the mk2 with your 500 mk2 and a 2x converter as all the af points are active and the focusing speed is superb, I use mine a lot with the 400DO mk2 and 2x mk3 and it's terrific.

The very point I was about to make....however if you purchase a (horror of horrors!!) grey import then a CFast card and reader can be bought for around £230...that's the cheapest I've seen it.

My experience of CF is exactly as Simon's above, however.

Yes - I know it's horror of horrors - but was considering grey import, partly because of the price, but also because of the worldwide guarantee that one of them offers - I'm not in the UK so often - so seems a little silly to buy UK for a UK warranty if I spend 90 percent of my life in other countries. And I thought they might have adapted the double charger to charge both batteries at the same time for the mk2 - but alas it's the same as the mk1 - 1 at a time... I'm sure there's a good reason for it?

Oh my God!!! :eek::eek::eek:

I just popped-off my first few shots of a pigeon flying towards me from next-doors roof. Every one is pin-shap, regardless of where in the viewfinder the bird was. This isn't a camera, it's a revolution!! How can it know what I'm wanting it to do? Maybe that's why there's no paper manual - it's thought controlled...!!! :D

It's created a problem for me....I've been delighted with the mk1, however I find now (it is my back up) that I'm not using it much and I'm thinking of selling it for a 2nd mk2......it's just slightly better in all aspects.

SOOC, just a quick crop/resize:

Not looking for a critique, this was just a point and shoot at the first thing I could find that was moving & breathing. How the hell did the camera know what to focus on, as it wasn't in the middle of the frame? This was coming straight at me with a 400 2.8L + 1.4x on. The 5D3 would have given me a few bits of blur and nothing else! Distance to subject would have been about 15m.

I'm off to the local wildlife reserve now! :D

Edit: A wee bit of processing done as it's starting to rain so I'm going nowhere!

OMFG!!!!!!!!!!

That bloody pidgeon has just cost me 5 grand. I am going to put my order in for a Mk2 body in the morning.
If it makes you feel any better, it's costing me double!!!

After a few hours with this thing, I'm just about to go on the phone and get another one. Think I'm going to be selling a few decent bodies very soon. :D

I'm in the same boat, my mk1 will be up for sale at the end of the Summer, hoping the prices might ease slightly when the 5D4 comes on the scene.

A little bird in the Pro trade has told me of an impending increase due to the $ Brexit thing. This increase will see a1DXii go up to the £5.8k mark! Might be best to move sooner than later. ;)

My local camera shop are telling me that ALL prices will be going up at least 15%..!!

Thanks chaps, will take that in to account....

Ordered and on it's way. Thank you to whoever it was on this thread that mentioned that Calumet were offering 2 year interest free it eased the burden somewhat!
FourRingCircus I feel your pain, I will stick to the 5D3 and 7D2 as back ups.

Second mark ii now on its way! Bang goes a holiday or a new car......!

Going to have to seriously consider selling some kit, if only to free up some space!

Not been a great day for photography, but I decided to do a little test. We could even make this a competition...... ;)

Looking at this photo, how far away do you think the lorry is from the lens?

This was a hand-held shot at 2500 ISO - the first image below is a crop down to about 2200x800. The second is a crop of the crop which has been upscaled. The original image is then shown for reference at 640x480.

I now understand why there is the cost premium on this body. To call it 'Incredible' doesn't do it justice.

To be able to read something clearly, which is the size of a registration number, at the distance involved here is just awesome! Even more unbelieveable at 2500 ISO.

So who wants to hazzard a guess at the distance to the lorry? :naughty:

I would say 1300yds
Rob.

I would say 1300yds
You're not far off Rob. The answer is a bit over 1600yds, or put another way, not far short of a mile!

Sun's up this morning, so I'm going out for my first proper play with this new toy.:)

Well Fedex delivered the camera about half an hour ago, all I need now is to wait for the battery to charge and then arrange for a bank loan to print the 500+ pages of the instruction manual!!
I would have thought £5 big ones would have been worthy of a printed manual.

OK now the pidgeon has hooked me in I am very new to BIF, I understand that the best drive mode is AI servo and probably case 2.The speed with a 150 - 600 lens needs to be upwards of 2000 sec but which AF selection zone is best for tracking the bird across the screen? The sigma lens has a max aperture of 5.6 or the canon 300mm is 2.8.

Thanks in advance. I figure if I can crack tracking a BIF then a football/ rugby player of kite surfer should be easy!

I'm feeling guilty for your expenditure, but if you're just blaming the pigeon, that's cool!! (y)

I'm still working my way through the autofocus controls myself, but for shutter speed, I'd suggest that 'upwards of 2000' is not necesarilly correct. The pigeon was at 1/1250s, so it would depend upon the circumstances. I like a wee bit of wing blur at the edges to show the action, so I wouldn't be heading up to the many thousandths for BIF. However, tracking a Peregrine might be a different story. It's just like shooting a helecopter or a fast jet - totally different shutter speeds required.

When it comes to AF zones, I'm really needing to RTFM. I'm used to centre spot only, so I don't know what will happen with the rest of the options.

The bird just looks guilty!!!
Got him again this morning......:D This camera body is obsene!!

Here is the full image of your guilty friend (papped at 1000mm!) followed by a significant crop.

So, it seems amazing for birds..has anybody used it for landscape? I know it is meant for sport and wildlife just ordering what it can do. Could anybody post landscape?

My 2nd 1Dxii arrived about an hour ago, so that's two CFast redemptions now in progress. Perhaps it's time for me to sell a body or four now. That said, my wife uses a 7D and she now has her eyes fixed on at least one of the 5Diii's.

Oh well thanks guys. My order went through today. Cannot wait to get my hands on it

Would anybody like to post some high iso images please, 6400 and above.?
I think I should be on commission from Canon!! :runaway:

Taken yesterday evening in the trees as the sun was almost down. Not a prize winning image, but done to experiment with higher ISO's.......

560mm, F4, 1/500s, TEN THOUSAND ISO !!!:

I reckon I had an extra hour with the camera last night, as I'd have already been at home with my 5D3's when this was taken!

Which crappy old lens were you using, John?
I presume 400 2.8 plus 1.4?

Just found a few shots of the same squirrel at 12,800 ISO:

Impressive looking pics coming from this camera, just out of curiosity does anyone use sigma glass with it such as 150-600 type lenses? If so how do they perform on it? Really want to try one out, even it just satisfies curiosity!

Well I will be as I recently purchased the 150-600 Sport sigma. Its already amazing on my 1DX so cant see any reason it wont be better.

Impressive thanks John, any noise reduction.?
Yes, they've been processed in LR, just as any self respecting photographer would do. Do you want the ingredients as well as the cake? ;)
