A few discoveries I've made:

The 1Ds (and I would imagine from that the 1D) needs a 6 pin firewire cable whereas the 1D2 uses a 4pin.

Batteries are tons cheaper from 7dayshop than buying Canon versions and seem to last well.

In Eos utility you can set up the standard settings the camera reverts back to if the clear settings buttons are pressed, mine for example is set to Aperture priority, evaluative metering, single shot AF with all points active and raw & large JPEG.

Not always easy, if you have 64bit W7 forget it, but non 64bit systems don't have any problems (I believe).

When buying a 1D body (any of them which take the NP-E3 battery) make sure you get the Canon charger with it. If you don't make sure to knock at least £100 off the price (replacements cost £100+ - usually nearer £200!) and generic chargers don't feature the recycle feature.

I'll no doubt be popping in from time to time.

What does the Recycle thing on the chargers do? I've never even tried to see what it does! i've got 5 batterys and only one of them is any good :( But i'm gunna crack one open to see if the cells are replaceable as they are in most batterys :D

The "Refresh" option will fully discharge the battery before charging it.

One thing to remember with this charger which caught me out the first time I used it is that it charges sequentially. At first I thought I had a duff battery because although both lights were on to say it was charging only one of the two batteries I'd connected to it felt warm. I now know that the 2nd one will charge once the first has finished. :bonk:

Because NP-E3s are NiCad rather than the more modern Lithium Ion or Lithium Polymer they can suffer memory effect (if you charge them up before they're run down they lose some of their capacity). A way round this is to condition them, run the battery right down before recharging it.

If you press recharge it will discharge the battery fully, then recharge it, it take a while (best to leave it overnight) but keeps your batteries in good order.

Let us know if you can because I've seen previous threads on places like POTN where people have tried to upgrade the cells but had limited success. What sort of cells did you have in mind?

That's handy to know cos I thought I'd got a single batter charger, will need to check that I havent given what you say above, thanks, good tip.

Multiple focus points can be used, one off the shutter button and a different one off the back button, I find it useful in macro photography with one of my lenses that slightly focuses in a different place (i.e. back or front focusing, cant remember which at present)

Discharging the battery fully before charging it again (not every time) helps to keep it tip top.

According to the blurb...

The button is to "refresh" the battery. If you press it, the battery will be completely discharged before charging. This is to keep the battery from developing 'memory' and not accepting a full charge.

The LED is orange during the refresh cycle, red while charging, and flashing red (twice per second) when fully charged.

Oops - I see somebody already answered lol

Sorry, I use Macs, didn't know about windows issues, presumably a firewire incompatibility?
AFAIK it's a 64bit issue rather than a Windows specifically. It is only listed on the Canon website for Mac OSX and not for 10.5/10.6. Having said that I believe that Mac OSX 10.5 can also run 32bits apps so maybe someone else can confirm if they've managed to change the personal settings of their 1D/s on a 10.5 or later machine?

I believe that someone has cracked open their battery and put in several high performance AA batteries, I'll see if I can find a link.

That would be interesting as (I don't know much about electrickery) the casing holds 6 roughly AA sized cells but AA cells are 1.5V so 6 of them would be 9V whereas the NP-E3 is 12V?

Means you have 8 batteries NOT 6 (1.5x8=12).

.

Il go with an experience, had a 1d mkI last year for about a month and it was definitely the best camera ive owned. I had to sell it to get a HDSLR for a wedding. Im currently shooting with a 60d and plan to get a 1D mkIII in the next month. The 1D series are such a pleasure to use, I would recommend one to anyone.

I'm on 10.6.7 (Snow Leopard) and can do it no problem.

Well my 1Ds II batteries are NiMh NOT Ni-Cads.

.

Indeed, my error.

Found it, it was a dead link but I've got it via archive.org:
http://web.archive.org/web/20080108154542/http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic2/116090/0#930398

I've had a look a look around too and found this 'how to' as well link

I can now see there's actually 10 x AA batteries at 1.2V each which explains the 12V rating of the Canon original :)

Useful to know :)

I've got Vista at home, firewire doesnt work. Seller had it working as he changed the owner name to mine before sending it to me, so the interface is probably OK but my OS isnt catered for. Wrote to Canon, virtually no response, bit dissapointed that they no longer support a pro camera when its a few years old.

Ho hum, still a great camera though (Mk2).

Matt

i think the whole 64bit issue is a lack of software from canon.

windows 7 installs its own driver for the mk3 (on USB) which works but i dont think there is canon software to work on 64bit.

You mean my charger is probably worth more than my hammered 1dmk2 with a 250,000 shutter count :)

Quite possibly, I sold a busted Mark 1 (failed mirror box) for about £300 not long ago. The fact that it had a box and a charger boosted the price I think!

Yup, I'm able to access the personal functions and user details of my 1DsMkII on my 32bit Vista laptop using firewire but my 64bit desktop can't see it.
