Having sold my 5D mk2 and getting the 1D mk4 i am interested in knowing which is the best wide angle lens for an APH sensor. I sold my 16-35 F2.8 and now wish i hadn't. Has anyone got any experience of landscaping with the 1D mk4?? Would the 16-35 be ok with a 1.3 cropped DSLR?

Unless the lens needs to fulfil other requirements then a TS-E17 (or maybe a TS-E24) would be an obvious choice.

Hi Matty

The Canon 16-35 Mk2 is my go to lens.I prefer it on the 1D4 to the 5DMK2.If I want wider I use the Tokina 10-17 Fisheye. Not ideal but until Canon bring our something wider then there's not much else.
I've used the Siggy 12-24 and it's ok.I'm just waiting for the new version to hit the shelves. If it's any good I'll certainly spring for one.I've also considered the 17 TS but I'm more of a zoom kind of guy.

Cheers
Gary

Not the "best" but the Samyang 14mm 2.8 seems like the best value for money to me going from reviews, quite a bit of barrel distortion but otherwise very good optically while giving you more width than the L zooms at a fraction of the cost of the Canon 14mm L.

Like all the rest of Samyangs lenses its manual focus but on an UWA I'd guess thats less of an issue for many people.

16-35 is superb and the 17-40 is also an excellent alternative, especially as you don't need the 2.8. It's wide enough and nice and cheap (relatively), and well sharp enough.

I love my 17-40mm f4 on the 1d mk4 a very good lens at reasonable money

I occasionally use 1D mk3 and that's very good with anything like 17-40mm. The soft corners don't show up anymore, so it doesn't even need to be stopped down that much. That gives 22mm equiv - wide enough most of the time.

If you want wider - then the options are 16-35mm - mk1 should be fine - again no corners, Tokina 12-24mm f/4 or 11-16mm f/2.8. In reality you'd get 14-24mm (18-mm equiv) or 12/13-16mm with Tokinas **** is excellent value imho.

You're correct Matty...no front mounted filters on the "17" but the "24" will take them.

Thanks for the input guys. I would love the TS-E17 but i don't think it allows me to use the Lee filter system due to the bulbous lens shape or am i missing something.

That seems like the main advanatge of the Samyang to me, rather than something like the Sigma 12-24 that will leave you unable to use any filters at all at the wide end you could get the 17-40 or the 16-35 that do then add the 14mm on the end for a bit extra that doesnt without spending a ton extra.

I thought the Tokina's were only for APS-C sensors

Go and try if you don't believe me. Half my flickr is shot with one and I had no APS-C camera for nearly 2 years. What would say about people using adapted glass - a complete heresy?

For f***sake can some not ask a simple question.

I use the Tokina 11-17mm on mine, from about 12mm onwards its useable :)

I have a 1DMkIV, and a 16-35 ƒ2.8L II
Although it works out at 21mm with the 1.3 cf, it's a good combination. If the worst comes to the worst, I take a couple of shots and stitch them, but I've never had any issues with that combination. Go for it!
The only awkward thing is that the 16-35 uses 82mm threads. If you have 77mm filters from another lens, you can just about use those with a very thin step-down.

Cheers Christian, I still have my Lee adapter ring from when i had my 16-35, I use the foundation kit so that's not a problem for me.
