Canon 1D miii or 5D mii ???

Currently own a mint canon 1D miii which I adore but I have found myself using it less and less for what I got it for (motorcycle racing) I have found I'm using my camera a lot more for wildlife, portraits (family & friends) and anything else other than action sport !

I am out this weekend doing some supermoto racing which is the first time in a while and then have not really got anything planned till the Wales rally in sep so I'm thinking...is it a waste, would I be better off trading it in for a 5D ???

I'm completely stumped :(

I've completely moved away from sports now and have just sold the 1D2 I bought when you took my 1D3. If you are planning to keep doing a bit of sport then I'd go for a 5D2/1D2 combo. The 1D2 is an oldie but a goodie. It is a pain to have different batteries/chargers etc but for £400ish it is a bargain body.
 
The 5D II will certainly be a great camera (I had the classic), but for wildlife wouldn't you want the extra reach of the 1DIII? Also the quick and variable AF will continue to be great for small kids, moving animals\birds etc.

Now you can get Magic Lantern on the 5D II which opens up a world of other options usually only offered with expensive trigger setups, which could be a draw, as of course would the ability to film should you need that, plus the IQ is a bit better (IQ being the same as the 5D classic which I thought was only a little better than the 1DIII)

Obviously bar for the reach issue the 5DIII is the answer, but sadly way to expensive at the moment.

I think what i really need to know is...

am i going to notice much differance in image quality with a 5D, the 1D is not bad by any means, i have never played with a 5D so i have nothing to go on, the wife does not feel happy with playing with the 1D and with the recent arrival of little feet (3rd) she is not happy to use ?

I love the 1D, everything about it, the size, the way it feels and it's performance ! I think the 5D2/1D2 combo sounds interesting and may well have to give that some thought !

Or just get off my fat arse and get out using the 1D3 more and get back into it :)

lol, I know what you mean my wife isn't exactly keen either!

I've not used the 5D II myself but very much considered it when I bought the 5D classic.
From my research at the time IQ\AF wise there is no difference between the mk I & II, however with the classic you loose some ISO, movie capability, the screen on the back is small and if you get an early model has a green tinge, no driver compatibility for windows 7, no nice auto ISO (not that you have that with the 1D III either), no auto cleaning, there's probably more but I can't recall them just now.

All that said the classic is a very good camera and at around £500 second hand is a relatively cheap way to see if its for you - best of all (unlike when I did it) all your lenses will already work with it :)

The 1DmkIII has been my goto camera for the last five years. :)

What kind of final output are your images? Small prints? Big prints? Web only? Is it all personal usage?

Most of my stuff from my 1DIII ends up as web images or up to A3+ prints. I even have some that have been accepted in an exhibition at the local art gallery so the meagre 10 mp hasn't been a problem. The handling is a fair trade for a lower mp. It certainly isn't the a lack of mp or a 35mm format sensor that's holding me back from creating half decent work... Although admittedly after five years it is time for a gear update. :cool:

Gear angst is a terrible thing ;), but if you like using it, keep it till it's time for a proper update. :thumbs:
 
Actually I'd forgotten about the MP count (10MP vs 21MP) - ignore what I said about missing the reach - the crop will more than make up for it.

So mostly that leaves AF and weather sealing and as I don't trust Canon to honour any weather sealing related issue that gets rid of that too.

lol, suddenly I'm wondering if I should swap :)

Edit: or not the AF would be missed to much.
