Hello all,

Recently purchased a EOS 400D starter kit with the canon 18-55m lens...
I have been out with this already and have found out that it is quite restrictive when out and about (zoom).

Anyone shoot with such a short ranged lens? and if so whats the best type of subjects for me to start learning the world of D-SLR?

the 18-55 is not a bad lens to start with ( you will of course get other opinions)
Just pratice with it really, family members, people, pets, landscapes, cityscapes what ever takes your fancy.

I shoot with a 17-40 L, even more restrictive but it's designed to be an ultra-wide angle so that's what I use it for...wide shots.

And yeah the 18-55 is fine for a starter lens as Cobra said...

i used to like motorsports photography with my S5600, but missed most of the races because i was looking throught the view finder.

I found doing landscpaes the other week was hard because even fully zoomed in it stil had alot of things i dint want in the frame...

Will the crop tool be my new freind? lol

i guess i will, as i said i have only been out once with the camera, it will teach me (in a harsh manner) to try and get more focus in to the pictures. Simply because i will have to crop the buggers.
I'm so glad a D-SLR takes such a large picture (in pixels)

Anyone have a nice example of a picture this a long range and maybe cropped?
(ideally from a 400d with this lens?)

wow, simply great!
think i have some learning to do

my first location was on a promanarde, went as far as i could...

I think i will have to understand the camera a lot better first. As posted above, it can get good results in which i was unaware of.

Just by writing that statement means you're heading in the right direction. ;) Go out shooting and post the pics for criticism....you'll get some pointers from other folk to advise you what you need to work on.
