canon 18-135 lens keeps 'dropping'

when im walking the lens keeps sliding open.. its a pain in the bum and im worried im going to damage it ! its only 6 months old, there is no 'lock' on it is this usual ? or do i have a problem with my lens ? Im using a blackrapid strap so its hanging down by my side, comments welcome!
 
If you google around you find quite a few people complaining that the 18-135 doesn't have a zoom lock, and this leads to the lens extending while it is being carried nose down.
 
pain.. must be a mod or something i can use perhaps a bit of old bike inner tube ! to try and hold it in place...
 
Those old "help for heroes" wrist bands and the like work well if you can find one the right size.

Have a look on UK Ebay - from the USA, 'Lens Band STOP ZOOM CREEP for Canon 18-135mm RED' Comes in different colours - this one is item No. 170646548728.

By the way I think the 'official' term for this is lens creep... I clicked on this thread because it sounded kind of interesting from the thread title! Thought maybe you had a lens with suicidal tendencies!
 
A little "zoom creep" never did any harm but if you want to try your hand at a DIY fix then have a read of this..........simple and concise with the mandatory warnings thrown in.

Yeah, the zoom creep is a known issue with the 18-135, but I don't really find it that much of an annoyance. If I'm in a crowd of people where my camera might get knocked or damaged, I'll hold it in my hands anyway.

What he sez......I just got black one o these for me Bigma, believe me when that lump slides open (frequently when the lock's not engaged), it flips you over like a TV wrestler when it hits the end stop :gag:

This fairly inconspicuous lazzy band works great, I can wave it about summat alarming (the lens that is :lol:) and it never budges, it's also perfect for locking your lens at a particular zoom setting and holding it there, top job :thumbs:
