Looking for some advice if possible.

I'm looking to upgrade my standard kit lens on my 550d but not sure what is the best option, the Sigma or the Canon.

Does anyone have any advice on either of these lenses?

Am I right in thinking the Sigma has internal focussing but the Canon does not? Would I be right thinking this could cause issues when using filters?

Any advice or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

The canon is a great lens on a 550d, not sure what you mean by issues with using filters, only filter I'd ever use would be a polarizing one, which fit fine on a 17-55

internal focussing? you mean a fixed front end which doesn't rotate when you zoom or focus...?
never bothered me at all unless you're using a circular filter
for every filters like UV etc it's not even an issue
also look at the tamron f2.8
good lenses.
I prefer the canon but it's 2x the price

Sorry yes I mean a fixed front end.

With regards to filters I meant when using ND Grads won't it make life easier with the Sigma as there will be no rotation during focussing or zooming.

I can't comment on the Sigma as I went for the Tamron instead, which according to most of the reviews I read was slightly better than the Sigma.

Might seem pointless me commenting but based on the fact the Tamron was supposed to be a little better I can safely say that the Canon will wee all over the Sigma! I upgraded from the Tamron to the Canon a few months back and the difference is plain to see... it's a superb lens!

However on the flip side the Tamron was a perfectly good lens and it depends on what you are shooting as to which is the best option. For me I upgraded because I started doing weddings and wanted better kit, but as a general purpose lens either the Tamron or Sigma will do an admirable job and perform as well as anyone could need them too.

If thinking of going pro at some point then get the Canon IMO as it's superior in terms of delicious bokeh and image quality

There is no rotation during focus or zooming on the Canon either.

Oh, sorry for some reason I didn't think the Canon was a fixed front end?

The front on the cheap 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 rotates, the 17-55 f2.8 doesn't :)
