Canon 17-55mm f2.8 or Tamron 18-50mm f2.8?

or 17-50 OS is supposed to be very good as well.
Having owned a 17-55 IS and now have a Tamron 17-50 i dont think there is a lot in image quality, however focus speed of the canon is far better and the IS is a benefit.

I have the Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 EX DC MACRO and if I had the cash I would own the Canon 17-55mm IS. Don't get me wrong the Sigma is a great lens, and I would recommend it to anyone.

The thing to remember the Canon is priced to a different market to the other lens

i cant comment on the Tamron but all i can say is that the canon 17-55mm is a exellent lens

If I had the cash it would be canon all the way, but I've got the Tamron and it's a pretty good value lens (though the wrong way zoom does my nut in)

This has been discussed quite a bit. General consensus seems to be that the Tamron is excellent but that the Canon has the edge on it, at a significantly higher cost. For me, that's a sticking point. The Canon is priced right up there in L glass territory, but it's EFS and build quality is, at best, superior consumer level.

I have the Tamron VC version. Now got the Canon. Not noticed much difference yet

have had both the canon and the tamron, both are excellent if money no object its the canon.

If i had to choose i would go for the tamron as its excellent value for money.

I agree ive had both and would go with the tammy 17-50 2.8,very very sharp, this is what im using at the minute, oh and its for sale in the classifieds section if your interested, its the non VC version.

I have just got the canon 17-55 after being in your position and chose the canon because I would have always been wondering "what if" so if money is no object then canon all the way.

Good luck with the sigma hope you get on well with it. if not there is always the canon :p

Nothing wrong with EFS build quality IMO. Certainly cant complain about the build of the 10-22 and 18-135. Not metal (though the mounts are) or weather sealed but never had an issue using them in the rain!
