Cant decide which one.

I haven't tried the 17-40 but I have the 17-55 and it's the tits. Bloody lovely.

Oh yes should of mentioned its for a crop body.

17-55, no contest unless you have a hang up about wanting a red ring

Hmm, interesting. Your profile reveals that you own a 17 - 40L, and a lot of other L lenses, yet no 17-55??

Yes but I have a 5D Mk2 and a 7D so I have no use for a 17-55 as the focal lengths are covered with the 17-40 and the 24-105 and if I needed f2.8 I would have the 24-70 , the 7D is used 99% of the time for macro with a 60mm and for motorsports and wildlife with the 100-400 where the frame rate and crop factor play a large part

hummmm so far there doesn't seem to be any contest?

No contest on a crop body. Only thing going for the 17-40 is perhaps build quality and compatibility with full frame bodies should you ever jump

Bear in mind resale is super high on these, especially the 17-55 that you really want ;-) so you can happily sell it on in q year or two if you need to!

Been here myself and went 17-55 IS. However, it's now going up for sale as it doesn't fit the 5D3 I just bought... So if your even considering full frame, it's worth remembering it's an EFS.

On a crop sensor there is no better general purpose zoom lens than the 17-55mm IS. If I still owned a crop and could choose only one lens, this would win by a country mile.

Also worth remembering that it's the best lens now.

The 17-40 isn't exactly a straight swap std lens for the full frame. So if the OP decides to go FF, he'll presumably be selling either to fund his 24-70.

I do like my 17-40 paired with the 1D3 especially if I'm out in the pouring rain.

I did have a 17-55 when I only had a 1.6 crop and that would be my choice.
