Hi all,
I have the Canon 17-55 2.8 and I think the barrel is a little "loose". Are they like this or do you think I should get it serviced?if so can anyone recommend somewhere in south essex?

Thanks Steve

Hi Steve,

We have 2 of the 17-55mm lenses, one is about 2.5 years old and the other is new, both have a fairly loose barrel, it makes for quick zooming but the lens creep when walking around with the camera on a BR strap is irritating.

I solved the lens creep with a Lensband but an elastic band would do the job.

My 17-55 exhibits lens creep when the lens in pointing down. Its a pretty sizeable lens with relatively free motion for quick adjustment of the zoom so to be expected. My 24-70 f2.8 has a lock to prevent this at its widest setting

I had one that was almost new when I got it. I used it for a year before selling it to go full frame. During that time it went from being snug to loose. It would walk as I carried it. The lens is fantastic but the build quality is not what you get from a L lens. I would still buy another one if I needed one.

Yip. I've never owned one of these but I have used it quite a lot. It's a superb lens, optically, but I think build quality is a bit less than it should be at this price point. Some people feel that this was a policy decision, Canon simply decided that they weren't going to offer L series build quality in an EF-S lens.
