Canon 1200mm+2XEFII+7D

Getting back to the OP's original question about reaching beyond the 3840mm why don't you just get the Canon 5200mm f14 lens and leave it at that. On a 7D the equivalent FOV would be 8320mm but you'd need a hell of a good light to use a 2x converter on it and get any decent shots. It can take shots up to 32 miles away so you probably wouldn't need a converter anyway.

Pah! If you're going to do effective focal lengths, telescopes are where it's at. Planetary imagers know all about long focal lengths..... ;)

This was shot at around 75m (yes, that's METRES!) EFL (1/4" CCD helps with the focal length multipliers!) on a 2.35m F10 telescope with a 3x focal length multiplier using a 1/4" CCD chip.

Curious as to what scope/imager you were using?

My first (and only) attempt at astrophotography was done in 2004 with a lowly Meade ETX90 and LPI CCD.



Didn't realise I had both Io & Ganymede in the frame until after registering, processing & stacking the image I saw two 'dust spots' was curious and looked up the info for the date/time/location of the shot.

I might still have been trying to clean the dust from that damn sensor otherwise! :naughty:

Thanks - yours is pretty darned good from an ETX90. I was using a Philips SPC webcam for the Jupiter shot I think, mono DMK with filters for the Saturn one taken through a Celestron 9.25" SCT with a 2x Barlow (with the spacing, it turned it into a 3x barlow)

I gave up planetary when I realised I was looking over 2 miles of houses at the planets - so looking through a heat haze that was just silly (you should see the original videos!). That and the fact it's bloomin cold outside at night :lol:

Sorry, haven't checked the forums in a couple of days.

I'm pretty sure the sensor design and anti-aliasing filters make it different don't they? You wouldn't get the same amount of sharpness from a FF crop as from a aps-c image?
 
The AA filter does affect sharpening, but most FF and Crop camera's have AA filters anyway. Nothing a little sharpening in PP won't fix anyway.
