Yes
Ok so today I went to cash converters and bought a Tokina 35-300mm f4.5-6.7 lens for my Canon 1100D.

First issue - When I use the lens on my camera with the camera set to 'Manual' I take a picture and get the error 'Communication between lens and camera is faulty' but it takes picture fine in all other modes.

Secondley - When the lens in on and I look throught the viewfinder, everything is extremely dark, even in a really bright room with all the lights ON everything is dark, I understand shutter speeds, exposure and appature well and no it has nothing to do with them. Also when I put my normal 17-55 Kit lens on everything is bright and perfect!! Also ever picture I take it very dark wit the new Tokina Lens.

Really hoping someone can help me

thanks

does it look like the the aperture blades stuck stopped down?

if you go to AV mode, stop the lens down the the highest f/number and press the DOF preview button, you should see the aperture blades close and open. if nothing happens, then that might explain the dark view in the viewfinder.

presumably the problem goes away with a different lens and the camera functions normally?

I would guess the lens isnt fully compatible with your camera, not set up correctly or its got sticky aperture blades.
When you view through the viewfinder, normally the lens aperture is fully open, which is why its bright. If the aperture is closed, the viewfinder will be very dark.
Does the lens have a manual aperture ring? Try setting it to its highest number eg f/22 and see if the camera takes contol of the aperture.

Take it back and get your money back, then Never go to cash convertors for camera gear again.

That lens may llok like a Canon fit but it could be that old it's not comaptible and would need rechipping.

If everything looks dark through the veiwfinder it sounds like stuck aperture blades to me, thats the only way it would look dark.

Just done some reading, and have to agree, it wont be chipped, so cant communicate with the camera.
Not worth the price or effort to get it done, so take it back.

Ok its clear that this might be my problem.... I know my canera stuff haha but when it comes to lens etc I aint so clued up.

*** should I be looking for to see it these blades are stuck has anyone got examples of anything of a picture.

Need to be able to show the people at cashcoverters tomorrow. Thanks

Just take your camera with you and show them with your lens and with the Tokina.

Make sure you stand your ground, they will do everything they can to avoid refunding you. Just remeber you dont have to take anything other than a refund.

Going to do that tomorrow, the guy that I got it from in Cash Converters seemed a decent bloke so hopefully I wont have any problems
