I'm interested in trying Macro and will be hiring this lens. Will i see much benefit in the IS version or is that not really much use in Macro. Sorry for my ignorance but i'm totally green when it comes to Macro photography

The IS on that macro is actually very good, and is very usefull in macro work. It works very well up to 1:2, and still helps at 1:1.

Just do it, still one of the best lenses I have ever owned and used. Far superior to the Nikon 105 VR.

+1 on the IS on that lens. And even better on the 7D as the 7D has a macro servo focus mode... Have to say the 100mm L macro is my favourite lens....

Good choice. The 2 focus limiters are brilliant too. Stick it on the camera and you'll never want to take it off.oh and despite what some say as to being too Sharp for portraits I have used it for some and its great for them too as well as a medium telephoto on a crop.

It's a great portrait lens too, if you can get far enough back. The IS is really useful in this scenario too.
