Own the 100 macro IS for a year now and shoot lots at 1:1. recently I have been noticing that when Im trying to focus on a bug in manual the lens IS starts to make this HIGH PITCHed note that grows in crescendo the longer I try to keep focusing.

If I turn off IS and on again it wont make it. But after contin ous use it starts again. The lens otherwise works fine with or without IS but lately I have started turning off IS because it is annoying plus puts me on edge cause I fear that my lens is gonna fall apart.

Do anyone ever had this problem please? Is it serouis?

It may not be serious but it certainly doesn't sound good. The IS on mine is very quiet when compared to the 300/4 or 600/4.

I hear the IS start up but once it's started I hardly notice any noise in mine. I have heard IS lenses make some high pitch noises and some grinding noises as well and all of those have needed specialist treatment, and none have been cheap to fix either TBH. I'd get it looked at sooner than later if I was in your position, mine is 10 months old now and gets quite a lot of use, but is quiet as a mouse really.

Tnx

But have been trying it out and weird becomes weirder without flash IS works perfectly, flash gun attached staright ok as well. Notice it only out in the field when I have flash attached throughcable cord (which I noticed is getting broken in places)

Are you sure you aren't hearing the flash capacitor charging, I have noticed on the past if the batteries are getting near the end of their life the noise seems worse.

used to blame the flash and low batteries hence why never bothered before. But yesterday when I turned off IS it stopped. The high pitched whistle usually comes when trying to focus at high magnifications of 1:1 or below (raynox) and usually when Im struggling to get it. If I release the push button it stops.

The clicky niose of IS i hear it ok and the rest is as quiet as it can be otherwise.

Tried to test it last night but nothing came out and worked as normal even at high magn... though used it without flash or with flash attached straight.

Check on the net to see if others had it and found some peeps complaining the same niose but noone apperently knows why or what solution.

When you half press the shutter button it also wakes up the flash as well as the IS on the lens. Are you sure it isn't the flash cord that is causing the noise? Try the flash with cord but a different lens attached maybe?
