I was browsing away on amazon earlier and noticed the Canon 1000D is available pre-order for £399.99. It looks reasonably spec-ed for the price, and I was considering maybe getting it as my first digital SLR. I quite fancy the liveview feature as I wear glasses and always get fustrated looking through viewfinders.

It then got me thinking. Will the release of the 1000D be likely to affect the prices of any others in the Canon range? I doubt the 450D will alter much as it's a fairly recent release I think, but maybe the 400D will take another drop in price once it's released? What do you think, should I hold off a month or two and hopefully bag a 400D bargain, or would I be better going for the 450D as a higher-spec camera? It's all so confusing.. :bonk:

The semi-pro 40D will be better value and is roughly the same price, after cashback.

Thanks for the response. I did consider the 40D, but the examples I managed to find on the web seemed a little too expensive. Maybe I'm just not looking on the right photography sites. Where should I be looking on line for the cheapest prices.. are there a couple of well known websites that people generally go to to check out the best prices?

You can buy it from Kerso for £550 and then get £100 cashback.

That's what I did and £450 is the best value I've seen it anywhere (and my cashback came fairly quickly - 3 weeks or so).

Depends really on your aspirations and goals. If wildlife is your thing, then the 40D is a significantly faster camera and will rel off a max of 6.5 frames per seconds, as opposed to 3.5. The 40D is certainly more rugged build as well, made from magnesium alloy and also has an additional LCD at the top, next to the flash hotshoe.

As has already been mentioned, Ian (Kerso) is doing the 40D for £550 before cashback.

Thanks for all the responses, I'll get in touch with Kerso and check out his prices. Cheers.
