Hi I am interested in buying a canon 1000D as my first camera. can anyone advise me on where to go to look for them 2nd hand? I have tried preloved and gumtree. any other classifieds I could try?

Thank you :)

This forum does have it's own classified section, but you need 100 posts to use it (although that's often increased for users who appear to be posting rubbish to get their counts up).

I bought a camera from Mifsuds, bit more then buying privately.

MPB are another online dealer.

EDIT: Or Canon's refurb shop on ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Canon-EOS-100...Cameras_DigitalCameras_JN&hash=item43a7e73467

http://www.lcegroup.co.uk/ are also worth a look.

Another place to try is Ffordes. I have used Mifsuds and MPB in the past and can recommend both. A friend has used Ffordes with an equally pleasant transaction

I actually wouldn't buy a 1000D as a starter camera - I did myself, and outgrew it quite quickly (actually the mount broke, since it is plastic)

... it was great whilst it lasted, and I learnt a lot with it but was horrified when the a piece of the mount broke off.

Just to avoid that happening I would buy a XXXd series camera -maybe a 500D or 550D used.

Or even the 450d. I still haven't outgrown mine. Pick them up fairly cheap as long as you don't mind the lack of video.

Plus 1 for the 450D, a great camera to learn with esp if you use it in RAW. Can be picked up at a good price S/H now.

Hello all, new here. Also trying to save for a DSLR. I have a EOS 500 35mm Film atm.
Those websites are only about £50 off the jessops price by me. (For the 1000D), reckon it's worth paying the extra for a brand new one?

Canon EOS 1000D comes with 10.1 megapixel APS-C size CMOS sensor On-chip noise reduction circuitry on CMOS sensor 3-layer Optical Low Pass Filter (LPF) Digic II Imaging Processor EOS Integrated Cleaning System High Speed and Quick Response Robust Body with Rugged Design High precision 9-point autofocus (AF) system Mode dial for easy access to a range of shooting modes New Optional Lenses and AccessoriesOn the other hand, the Canon 1000D still has quite a lot in common with the 450D - the same Live View system, with not one but two different modes including contrast detection AF, SD cards instead of CompactFlash, and the EF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS kit lens, which should help dispel some of the criticism aimed at Canon for not offering an affordable image stabilisation solution. The Canon EOS 1000D is priced at £499.99 / €649.99 body only and £579.99 / €749.99 / $699 with the 18-55mm IS kit lens. What does all the borrowing and downgrading ultimately add up to? Mark Goldstein tested the Canon EOS 1000D to find out...

As above, I'd go for a xxxd series camera first. I started out with a 400d and loved every minute of the time I used it. I did outgrow it after about a year and a half and couldn't go back to one now unless necessary but i got some amazing pictures. A second hand 400d or model above wouldn't cost much more than a 1000d.

Not sure whether its frowned upon or not, but I'm looking around for a camera myself and tend to find myself watching this site: http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/ to keep an eye on prices and availability of the three models I am considering.

Hope that helps,

Alan

I`ve a 1000d and love it ,i paid £359.00 from currys with a kit lens , nice camera

For me the problem with my previous 1000D was having to go into the menus to change settings. By the time I had found my way through the setting the moment was gone :'(. A good enough camera but if doing it again I would go with either a 450D or a good used 40D

As far as i was aware, the 1000d doesn't have a live view function. That was one of the main reasons why i went for the 450d.

The one thing that comes up with the 1000d quite often is people will tell you it will limit your photography, my own opinion from my limited experience is the lens is where you'll need to spend money

BandyQuill could you please tell me what lens you've got as I've just got a 1000D and I want to build a collection of lenses up.

i have the 1000d, and have had now for over 2 years, people saying they have 'outgrown it' arnt trying hard enough, the pictures you can get from it can be brilliant, have a look on my flickr id recommend spending money on lenses for the camera then when you do come to upgrading you should be fairly set...

That's not true. I tried as hard as I could to shoot motorsport at 6fps, and badly lit gigs at ISO3200, and just couldn't make it work.

Edit: Oops, I forgot to bold the bit I was replying to. :D Sorry about that. I agree it is a perfectly capable camera. It was just not up to the tasks I required of it.

That mifsuds seem decently priced for used stuff. Problem
I found with gumtree was that I emailed and phone about 20 people the good offers where sold, some where asking for new or more than new price and about 60% never replied.

Thank you :)

have you handled one ? , far better to try all the options out before deciding what you are buying ..........

maybe you were expecting too much from a bottom of the range camera then :S

That's not how I would read that.......

I started off with a 400D which seemed to do everything I needed/wanted to do and more but I found the more photos I took, the more things I wanted to try, like taking photos at rugby matches.

This worked from Sept - mid-Nov and March until the end of the season but the max ISO1600 of the 400D meant shooting on a dark afternoon (which a lot of them are between Nov - Feb was pretty much impossible.

Now I know I could've got a faster lens but an f2.8 zoom or prime long enough to shoot a rugby match would have cost more than the 7D I upgraded too ;)

It's always to think about where you might go and want to shoot rather than just assume you're only a beginner and only need the most basic camera......

No, I wasn't at the time. Sorry if my post appeared rude. I was a little bit tipsy. :D

I just took exception to the "not trying hard enough" comment. I had a 1000D for a year or so, and It served me very well. I got some great shots with it, but when I strayed into different territories I really struggled with it. It's by no means a bad camera, and I have recommended it to a lot of people. The caveat is that you might struggle in low light, or when shooting fast stuff, etc. That's why I upgraded quite quickly. Not everyone's the same though. I'm not suggesting that everyone will want to do as I have done.

So, essentially, I agree with Russ, and that's what I was trying to suggest originally, albeit in a cryptic and unpleasant way. :D
