Hi.

I am looking at Pentax 200d / canon 1000d/ sony a300 with quite an interest..

I like Pentax build quality and Sony/ Pentax ability to use any lens where as I believe lenses for canon would be expensive affair..

I know Pentax 200 d lacks Live view and Sony A300 has tiltable live view but can any one shed some light on its depth of field preview for Pentax k200d ???

I know Sony does not offer DOF But some *** say that since A300 offers Live View , you dont need DOF..

Cheapest good deal for k200d is from Jessops / Currys at 379.99..with additional GBP 50 cash back..making it 329.99

At this price I can get canon 1000 or sony A 300 give or take a few quids ...

I like Sony A300 as well and kit lens has better range but it lacks Depth of field and View finder is kinda of small and thats the only reason i am not considering it..

Am I asking for too much??

What would you advice . I have handled Sony and Canon and will try Pentax tomorrow !!

Cheers:)

Hi Fella. Also in the same boat as you! a300 for me felt the best in my hand. Lenses are cheaper, but then you don't get the same range as canon. the 450d can be had for £370ish after cashback at the moment. And there's a strong feeling that prices will keep falling towards, and after xmas. I'd be tempted to hold tight for 5 weeks and get one in the sales.

If liveview is important then the sony's seem to nail it on usability! Tiltable screen is great! But if you don't need live view, the sony a200 is the same camera, but for around £210!

I think everyone will say the same thing. You won't go wrong with any of those 3 models. All make great beginners D-SLR's. Just make sure you get the body that fits best in your hand (Sony fits best in mine), and look at the lens range. After all, no point getting a canon if you can't afford the IS USM lenses!

Oh, and another thing is LOOK AT THE PICTURES!! Honestly, i hear rubbish about the sony and it worried me. But get on flickr, photobucket, or the forums here. and search for pictures by the model of camera you're interested in. you'll be amazed by some of the pictures people can take with low price cameras. Although its worth noting we won't be taking that quality of picture for the first year!!

Thanks Evil RAs

Any comments from Pentax k200d users most welcome!!

cheers

Hi Ajex

I'm afraid I can't really comment on the K200, I used to have the K100 and now have the K20. All I can say is that I love the results I get, build quality feels solid and it feels great in my hand, which is important. If you havn't already i'd get yourself into town and and all three in your hands and see what you think. As for Live View, the K20 does have it but to be honest, i very rarly use it, not sure what others have to say about it.

I have heard good things about the Sony's but never used one, there is a big sony thread in Talk Equipment you may want to have a look at.

Hope this helps.

@DarknFuzzy

Thanks for your reply...Am going to handle it post lunch ...

Comments from actual users of K200d are eagerly awaited..

Many Thanks

I went to see the k 200d and discovered Pentax k-m/2000..

It is much lighter than 200d and now thats on my short list for sure besides a Nikon D60

cheers

Go and hold and play with all the buttons.

Comfort should be a factor in your purchase and size and layout can differ greatly.

having got a nikon d40, looking for something different and a slight upgrade

main thing for the sony for me, is the liveview and quick focus.

Sold my Nikon D40 & Got a Sony a200 Then got a Sony 18-200mm lens.
Never regretted it 1 Bit.
Only complaint with Sony is the kit lens is to soft:thumbs:

i'm thinking of getting a300 body only and then save a little and put towards 18-200 straight off

good luck andy on the sale
great peice of kit

think i got my hand smaking for shameless plug in the past ;-)

get the 18-250mm, much better than the 18-200mm.

as the a300 is similar to the a200, have you found it a good upgrade from the d40 and why?
