CANON 100-400MM IS LENS

I can see both sides to this.

One thing that's made me think, is the actual practicalities of lugging around the 100-400 AND the 70-200....I'm beginning to veer towards saving myself the 500 quids and getting myself a 70-300 IS for now and seeing if I actually make use of the extra 100 mm (plus I have a 1.4x tc)....

The 70-300 won't take up too much more room in my bag and if I find it gets lots of use, then maybe I'll seriously consider the 100-400mm...but if I don't use it enough - then I've not shelled out close to a grand for it! :p

Matt

Matt, is the 1.4 TC a Canon TC.
The 70 - 300mm f4.5-5.6 DO IS USM lens is not compatible with Canon's 1.4X or 2X Extenders

No - it's a kenko one :)

Have used it with a few Canon lenses, with surprisingly no problems - AF works etc.

I've just ordered a 100-400mm IS from the legend that is Kerso....

So, this Kenko extender works with this lens does it? AF? Where can I get one and how much?!

Weggy - I don't know if it works with the 100-400, but I never had any problems with the bigma I used to own, or with my 70-200L F4 that I own :)

Some extenders will allow AF ( they do the same thing as the tape trick ).
The camera is fooled and tries to AF.
Normally, in good light, this will work just fine.
In dim conditions the lens will hunt.

Bottom line is, Canon didn't pick f5.6 out of the air for non 1-series cameras.
You, therefore, hunt at your own risk.
If the USM motor burns out, don't tell Canon why.

Thanks for that. Any ideas which extenders they are?

Hi Weggy,

Only the Canon 1.4 will AF on canon bodies. The X2 will only manual focus, except on the 1D series.

Both of the Kenko DG 300 pro extenders will, I believe, work OK in AF mode on smaller bodies, because the extender does NOT communicate with the body - it merely passes on the len's native setting to the body, ie, the widest aperture setting, at least this is the case on my 1DNMKII, and I don't think the contacts are any different to other Canon bodies.

See my review on the Extender 1.4 and the Kenko DG 300 X2 here:

Not exactly.
A 1.4 TC will AF on a 1-Series body if the lens has a max aperture of f5.6 (f8 with the TC fitted since 1 stop of light is lost ).
A 1.4 TC will AF on a non 1-Series body if the lens has a max aperture of f4 (f5.6 with the TC fitted since 1 stop of light is lost ).

A 2x TC will AF on a 1-Series body if the lens has a max aperture of f4 (f8 with the TC fitted since 2 stops of light is lost ).
A 2x TC will AF on a non 1-Series body if the lens has a max aperture of f2.8 (f8 with the TC fitted since 2 stops of light is lost ).

The Canon TCs' will only work on some Canon lenses.
Some non Canon TCs will override the above and try to focus regardless of the max aperture.

My lens has just arrived.... my god what a beast! I can only begin to imagine how heavy a 600mm must be....! Think a trip to the gym is on the cards...

Cheers CT...

Here's to some sharper images

paint it black and put a gold strip on it, and you're onto a winner!

;)

Not too sharp now - there's enough competition around here as it is. ;)

Much MUCH heavier than 100-400 ! ;) i swapped back to the 100-400 the other day and it felt like a kit lens ;)

Think I'll give the 600 a miss then.... nothing to do with being skint you understand...

Just a shame that this is the darkest day we;ve had all week.... Monday to Friday (at work) bright sunshine. Saturday (at home) overcast and dark... I hate this flaming country!

Same here - the light is dire, and I think I saw a Cuckoo first thing.
