Hi,

Was just wondering people's opinions.

Been looking at the Canon 100-400 F4/5.6 L to use for motorsports (mainly drag racing) with my 400D, however is a lens of that quality overkill for a 400D?

Should I get a better body (40D etc) before getting the lens?

Also, is it sad that I'm considering sacrificing the car I want to buy the lens!?!?!

Cheers

i use a 100-400mm on a 400D it 's a good combination, and the camera is a fantastic one, i love mine.

Regards mark

Great combination. There's nothing wrong with a 400D. Tried the same lens on my 40D a few weeks ago. Better balanced on the bigger body but it's still a brute, cracking piece of kit though. Just need the money to buy one, problem is the guys at Lenses For Hire do such a good job it makes more sense to do it that way for now.

Just do it....you know it makes sense!! :)

The 400D is a cracking camera, even though it's an entry level one. Just take care to always supprt the lens/camera junction when carrying it... don't let it dangle!! Always use the tripod collar to attach the unit to a tripod (not the body).

It's a super lens.

Iv used it on my 300D, same as others have said on here, good glass is good glass no matter what body you put it on.

And as for
"Also, is it sad that I'm considering sacrificing the car I want to buy the lens!?!?!"
i would trade the wife for a good lens,

ps: she doesnt read this fourm ;)

As already said, absolutley nothing wrong with a 100-400 on a 400D :)

In fact - this is what it'll look like :D

Just do it ;)

100-400 is a cracker, don't be put off by stories of soft etc, I have A1 prints off a 40D with a 100-400 and they are excellent.....get it!!

Agree, top glass on entry level body is better than vice versa, any day of the year!

You won't be disappointed if you go ahead and purchase!

:agree: get the glass over a new body.

If I had the cash, I can't even express how quickly I'd have one!

:agree:

I think thats going to be my next lens for my 400D when I done some saving up

*drools over the photo*

Go for it. I used it on my 350D for a year and a half before I got the 40D. Brilliant lens:thumbs::thumbs::thumbs::thumbs:

Good glass is far better than a car :)
there is another thread running atm about the 100-400 on a 400D, it's a good combo, although it does need decent light but it's a lot of lens for the money imo. Decent glass before the body is better.

Another satisfied 100-400 on 400D user:clap:

Mind you I use my 100-400 99% of the time supported on monopod/tripod because I'm looking at 50 yrd + shots of deer and the like. So, for distant shots where the 1.6x sensor "adds length" (forgive my poor terminology) it's a very sensible thing to do.

I too daydream about "My next camera body" but thank goodhess for the credit crunch in that it stops me just going out and waving the plastic about.

FWIW, I waver between adding a 40D or going full sized sensor with a 5D of the mk1 variety.

In lighter, more frivolous moments I think about a new 400D ex 7Dayshop BNIB and shoving it in the back of the cupboard. Why? I reckon that the 400D is a classic.

Cheers everyone, I started this thread in September, think the link in the other thread caused people to start replying to it again!

I still have the 100-400 on my list but need to see how the year pans out, credit crunch and all that!

Good glass is far better than a car :)

Ended up buying the car in the end! Long story involving a van driver not looking where he was going and the other half's car :(

See, if you'd taken our advice and bought the lens you'd have seen him coming :D

I bought a 200L for my 400d and wish I'd hung on for a 400!
That said, I love the 200 also. Buying a 1.4x extender as it is the cheaper option for me at the moment.

Look forward to seeing some of your work too

I started the same thread a few days ago and i am now selling my motorbike to fund it, Im just watching a few bikes on ebay to make sure i get a good price then it's up for sale and lens bought.

I also have the 400D.

your getting rid of the blade?

Sure am bud i bought it to try and bring and old passion back but the flame has gone.

Not got the time for it, sits in the garage most its life so makes sense to get shot and plundge the money elsewhere if you no what i mean.

If you here of any buyers(wink wink);)
