Canon 100-400 to Sigma 120-300 OS

Hello folks,

Thinking about the above change, primarily for more length via 1.4 & 2.0TC. Anyone out there done it?, what where your findings other than the obvious weight increase.

How was AF, IQ.
Sigma seems really cheap for what you get?

I switched from a Sigma 150-500 to the 120-300 for the additional length, works fine with 1.4 and 2X TC's, it is heavy though. This is a moderate crop from a 2X shot

The 120-300 OS has got some pretty amazing reviews, especially for birding / action.

Over at The Bird Forum , I'm a member there myself, there are folks who have shot some excellent birds using the Sig and TC's, 1.4x and 2x

I switched from 100-400 (which I had years and loved) to a 120-300. I mainly shoot motorsport and in low-light 2.8 is nice to have, plus still having flexibility to "react". The lens is very nice, AF quick and accurate. With x1.4TC I do notice AF slow-down and some slight softness - which improves as you stop down. With x2TC AF is much slower, not really quick enough for fast moving stuff (e.g cars), although I have still nailed some very nice shots with this combo - the keep rate just isn't good enough IMO. But for stills then very acceptable quality (600mm). I use on 7D or 1D2.

I had my 100-400 for so long and had really got used to it to get the best out of it. I need to do same with 120-300. It's a very solid bit of kit though. Far heavier than 100-400. I use on monopod. Could be handheld though, the IS is very good. Good workout for the guns too :) But I prefer to use a pod, did even with the 100-400.

My 100-400 was best at around 360mm so never really used fully maxxed. 120-300 with 1.4 TC is good, I would say IQ is as good. I really did like my 100-400 though, still kind of miss it :'(:D
