Which would be the better lens out of the 2 for wildlife, airshows? Looking out for a secondhand Canon 100-400mm L lens, or a new Sigma 150-500mm lens, or 50-500mm lens? anyone got any pictures taken with any of the previously mentioned lenses? Many thanks.

I have no experience of the Sigma lenses but was really pleased with the Canon 100-400 when I hired one for a week. It's now on my shopping list of lenses to acquire.

As a pentax user with a siggy 120-400, I would suggest the L glass. No question!

Both the Canon 100-400 and the Sigma 150-500 together with the Bigma 50-500 can all produce good results. The Sigma 150-500 has the best IS system the Bigma having none at all. You should be able to produce good images with any. There are plenty of examples of images you can see but here are a couple with the Sigma 150-500

I'm using a 150-500mm and i'm well impressed - the IS is very good.

i believe i've been let down on a 100-400 canon lens, so am pondering the idea of the siggy 150-500? any more suggestions, recommendations?

Canon 100-400 without a doubt.

trouble is, i was hopping to get a secondhand one as a new one is out of reach at the moment. especially as i am saving for my wedding in August. don't want to be stood up at the altar over a lens!

Im selling my 100-400L on ebay at the moment as I prefer my 150-500, I find it much better and sharper on both my 40D and 5Dc, but it does need good light to get the best out of it, why dont you hire both and see which you prefer.

not interested in selling to a local fella to you, are you? no ebay fees or postage?;)

well i picked up my 100-400 off of a fella off this site and wow! it is in immaculate condition, and i can't wait to get out there and use it. I'm now after a 70-200 lens, and i'm considering the 70-200 f4 non stabilised. any good?

No idea about the 150-500 but I sold my Bigma (50-500) a few weeks ago, and switched to the 100-400L.

The range of the Bigma can't be beaten and it worked superbly on my 7D:

Below 100mm and above 300mm it got a bit too soft for my liking unless stopped down, and I never really used it in anger above 420mm or so (I was searching my picture archive for real samples @500mm when I put it up for sale but found nothing!) so I really only used it as a 50-420mm lens :-) .

The 100-400L is definitely the better of the two overall through the zoom range, and simply seeing the view through the finder stabilize when the IS kicks in is great. But if one can't afford the 60% price premium then the Bigma is a really nice piece of kit to work with as well.
