I have both these lenses. I'd say go with the 100-400L for the reach.

The 70-200 2.8IS is a fast lens best used within that range. As soon as you add a 1.4 TC you lose 1 whole stop, so have an effective aperture of f4. You'd also need to stop down at least a stop to compensate for the quality loss with the converter. You're now down to f5.6 and losing all the advantage of your fast lens.

I wouldn't recommend using a 2XTC at all with either lens.

CT's right - for those subjects the 70-200 is going to be too short, so you'd be using it on the TC all the time. AF with the TC is slower and less reliable, so you'd be struggling with fast-moving targets. The 100-400 would be more suitable, although I wouldn't use a TC on it as you'll lose AF altogether.

Hi,

definitely the 100-400, the 70-200 with TC isn't nearly as good, the 100 -400 is ideal for all the subjects you mention I've owned both and used them for exactly the same subjects too

Check out my Birds ( pre feb 2008 shots I think ) and Superbike/Supersport galleries for samples with the 100-400, the Colin Mcrae Rally pics were with a Canon 70-200 F2.8 if you want to see some with that lens.

Mike.
