Hi guys, Im going to be doing mainly wildlife photography and as the title says Im looking at these two lenses, my local camera shop is trying to sell me the Sigma at around the £600 ish mark but I feel more drawn to the Canon lens , I'm the kind of person who likes to buy things once even If I have to pay a bit more for piece of mind, but would the extra for the Canon be a waste of time comparatively speaking between the two :help:

best regards

Hi there can not give you much info on the sigma but the 100-400 canon is a great lens you wont go far wrong buying this , if you do a search in the forums you might find some of the shots on here with that lens ,hope this helps :)

You would be better of with 500mm for wildlife but the canon is a better lens.

All I would say on this is consider whether you want the zoom? I have a 100-400L and tbh I wish now I'd gone for the 400mm prime. I use the 100-400 for wildlife, so it rarely goes below the longest end.

Couple a 400mm prime with a decent L glass walkabout and you've just about got it covered! Or maybe 2 lens to cover from wide to about 200mm!! If I had my time again, that's what I'd do.

When I was looking for a longer lens these two were the pair that gave me the big headache, in the end I went for Canon, It's a fair bit lighter, and to be honest I was a bit scared about spending that sort of money and ending up with a "soft copy" of the sigma. Out here in rural France there was no chance of comparing the two before buying, so I went for the safer option. I am happy to say "I do not regret the choice for one minute". I've also got the 1.4TC and though you lose autofocus you can still get good IQ with it.
I use mine for (if I'm honest) 80% of my shots. I love it to bits.

I've got the 100-400 mostly for motorsport etc but love mine. I was using it at Slimbridge with a 1.4tc ok, and I did get this great robin shot last weekend:

I love mine - great lens

I had the Sigma 135-400 for a while. Good price, but the AF was terribly slow. Changed it for the Canon 100-400. Much quicker AF and has IS. The zoom does go a bit soft at 400mm but limit to 375mm and it should be fine
