Canon 100-400 2 Autofocus speed

Aaaaah you tube. The cornucopia of all knowledge.

I can only say it focuses very fast on all the cameras I've owned and still own.
The only time my version slows down is when I fit a 1.4X converter on it.
 
I tested the canon 100-400mk2 and all I can say is that is fast. I did settle for the sigma 150-600c in the end but that was for the reach.

Reading the tinternet reviews and from my own personal experience, the lens AF is as fast as basically anything else in it's class.
It's my guess that the camera body may have an impact on speed. On my 1dx2 it is almost instantaneous and pretty much the same on my 7d2.
It can also pay to set the focus limiter switch when you are sure your subject won't fall inside the range.

In reality almost all modern lenses focus quickly with the possible exception of the 85mm 1.2 L ver 1 or 2.

If you're musing buying one, why not try it in your local camera dealers store.

Canon 100-400 mk2 focuses very fast, usually faster than you can think in phase-detect mode (through the viewfinder). In live-view/video, that's a different matter and highly camera-dependent.

And while speed is obviously important, in practise accuracy and consistency are more likely to nail it. None of those 150-600s can live with the Canon there, if only because of their slower maximum aperture which is critical with phase-detect AF.

Check this test on DPReview, and especially the AF tracking of the footballer and car. Bottom line, there is no better 100-400mm zoom.

I cannot comment on the 80D AF performance as I have never even picked one up!
However on my 7D2 and 1DX the Tamron 150-600 and Sigma 150-600 C both leave something to be desired (AF wise) compared to the Canon 100-400 Mk1 - the Mk2 is noticeably faster and more accurate than any of them as well as rendering better IQ. Yes it is more expensive but it is a better lens.

They do focus fast with tele converters but I am led to think canon deliberately slows the USM to maintain AF accuracy.
I may have imagined that of course.
 
I've just tried my EF 100-400 II on my 7D2 and my wife's 80D. Focusing speed is similarly quick on both bodies.

I cannot confirm this however if there is not enough light to your AF sensor given the smallest f number, this would be affecting it's performance. Same situation as trying to AF at low light situation.

Historically the 1.4x reduced the motor speed to 50% and the 2x to 25% but modern lenses with the latest converters are less restricted.
