This is such a cool lens, as well as having an awesome wide angle the IQ is fantastic, I just was not expecting a lens like this to be so good. The wide angle is often a gimmick but the IQ seems the best of my lenses so far :D ...I know they're not the best but they are still not bad!

Couple of questions- is it worth having a lens hood (for about 1" of cover?!) and will a CPL fit without vignetting? Apart from a couple of protective filters I have not experience with them, and think a CPL would be good. Pity it won't fit my other lenses but maybe a step up ring would work for them? Cant really afford to buy expensive filters for all my lenses!

A CPL will fit but take it from experience - they're hard to master on wide angles because you get a bandy effect. I am actually going to ditch mine and just use a UV filter from now on (for protection)

Could you show us some shots please? I have a Sigma 10-20 that I am more than happy with but I always hear good things about the Canon .

I have this lens and have bought the Cokin P wide-angle filter holder for it. I have no filters yet so I am not talking from experience but I have heard that this holder works well with your lens.

http://www.cokin.fr/ico6-WIDE-ANGLE-HOLDER.html

the reason I am going for this filter system is exactly so i can share my filters between different lenses (although both of my lenses happen to be the same diameter at the moment). You just buy a different adapter ring for each size lens (cheap - like £7 or something).

I will be coupling this holder with the hitech filters sold by teamworkphoto.co.uk as they have been recommended above the Cokin ones and are cheaper than the Lee ones.

Hope that helps,
Dub

p.s. obviously this system does not really offer protective capabilities. I am relying on my lens hood for that and not using any protective filter. Am I mad to do this?

:D

I did wonder that about wide angles with CPL's, maybe its better to just alter the colour in CS3 then, cheaper too

Ok I haven't taken a lot of pics yet and my camera is not with me- heres a couple (pretty much all I have on this PC!!!!) Not your normal UWA stuff but a bit different- though maybe not the best type or quality of pics to promote a lens with!!!

I recently got he Siggy 10-20mm and it's a whole new world. I have to keep remembering to watch I don't get my feet in :D, I recently got a polorizing filter and not not noticed anything ngative. Ordered a wideangle filter bolero too but am awaiting it's arrival.

Have fun.

Hi. I have a low profile (thin) CPL for my 10-22 and use a UV filter on it. I think you always get a certain amount of darkening at the corners, some of which you can fix in RAW. I think the 77mm filter also fits my other lenses, so it wasn't such a major expense.
Nice lens, I don't use it nearly enough.

Love it also, having recently aquired one.
However having major problems finding the best solution to using nd grads. Tried Cokin wide holder, on front of a protector and get vignetting between 10mm and 12mm. Tried a suggestion of attaching grads with blue tac, but that is leaves no room to slide the filter about. Don't want to remove protector, anyone used any other different makes of wide holders that avoid this problem. Problem about to get worse once my ND stopper arrives. Looks like the protector will have to come then.

Anyway here is one of my 10mm wide shots

A hood also adds protection as well as controlling unwanted light.
I use the official Canon hood with my 10-22

Distortion is a normality with some shots taken with a SWA lens, you can see this with Blackbirds 2nd shot and also with Peter10ds shot.
However, I like the quirkiness it adds to both shots and I tend to leave it with some shots or fix it with software.

One arrived from Stewart @ LFH today, can't wait for the weekend :D

Used it last year, but I don't think I used it to anywhere it's full potential. Fun times ahead now I know a bit more about photography :)

Regarding the distortion - I find DPP will remove it very effectively for my 10-22.

This lens is without exception the best lens i've ever used.

It seems to want to produce sharp photos every shot. It has amazing corner sharpness for such a wide lens.

A few of my favourites with it:

Agree with everyone, the Canon 10-22 wide angle is a very good quality lens.
I was told that it has L-series glass in it so effectively is a L-series lens but because it only fits a cropped sensor it was not given the L to its name.

It is a cracking lens and I really miss it. Sure the CPL with ANY wide can be a problem, but sod it, it still rocks for those blue skies with with fluffy clouds, even with dark patches.

Add the Canon hood to it, makes you feel a bit safer. Skip the UV filer schmilter...

Shame its only EFS really, guess if it was full frame it would cost a grand...

As previously stated (I think) I'm pretty new to filters, what sort of ND filters could I get so I can use slower shutter speeds in bright light? Even at f/22 the slowest it would go was 1/250 today in the sunlight and would like to get some more movement (and experiment!)

I love this lens and was thinking of getting some Hitech gaduated ND filters for lanscape photography. Does anyone know if a lee foundation kit filter holder is compatable with this lens or do I need to be looking for a specialist wide angle filter holder to avoid getting the holder in the frame?

I was advised to use the cokin p wideangle holder which only takes one filter instead of 3. Apparently this still vignettes at below 12mm though. Apparently it holds the hitech filters.

I say apparently because i have the lens and holder but not the filters yet so have not tried it.

I can confirm what you have stated is correct - the Cokin P wide holder does take HiTech 85 grads, and it does still cause vignetting between 10mm and 12mm (that is with a Hoya protector also attached to this lens).
Having seen pics elsewhere with this lens, that appear to be using grads, I suspect there is some combination of filter holder that might work. I have currently resorted to using blue tac to hold the filter in place, rather than use holder when at 12mm or below, but this not ideal.
If anyone out there knows what works, please advise.

What are people using with this specific lens? Im after a ND grad or polorizer

I used to have a 10-22 with my 40D (along with the 17-55). Like the 17-55 I would say that optically it is of L-series quality.

Build quality wise, I had the chance to compare it physically to the 17-40L before I sold it and it is strikingly similar, better than the 17-55 IMO. Lacking the extra sealing (and red paint) of the 17-40L but otherwise very, very similar.

I found it to be one of those 'must have' lenses when I had the 40D, a mate at work has just hired one for a few days and he's currently working out where to find the money to buy one.

Highly recommended.

Glad your having fun with the 10-22. It will take a C-Pol filter (I have a Hoya) but like others above said watch out for banding if the sky is clear.

Saying that the C-Pol isn't so necessary for blue skies as the colour from this lens is good anyhoo.

You really want the Lee wide angle adaptor, which is 30UKP as opposed to 15 for the normal.

Occasionally I screw the adaptor into my circular polariser the the frame is visible at around 10-11mm.

For bright daylight you want something like a 10 stopper. B&W make a screw in one, Lee make one compatible with their filter holder. Beware they are not cheap.

Otherwise if looking for movement wait until the morning or evening when there is less light and it is better quality anyway

Out of all my lenses the UWA gives me the biggest grin factor :D

I couldn't justify the cost of the Canon so ended up with the Sigma 10-20.

The results don't look too bad to me at all :)

I agree. Had a chance to compare the Canon and the Sigma together and could not see what the extra couple of hundred pounds was going to give me.

One my top 5 with the Sigma 10-20.

I assume that if you used the 100mm filters instead of the 85mm "p" size you dont get any vignetting problems ? Not a cheap solution though....

This is not ideal, but here is the method I have resorted to, using the 85mm P size filters.

Using a Cokin P wide holder, do not attach the adaptor ring, then the holder will slide over any ring filter you have attached (uv, b&w ect) to the Canon 10-22 lens. Then use some blue tac to hold the wide fliter holder to the UV, Protector or whatever. By doing this your 85 P slot filter will sit flush with the front of the lens. I have not had any vignetting with this, however you must be aware that you need to be careful as the blue tac is not as secure as an adaptor ring.
