Canon 10-22, Sigma 8-16mm or Tokina 11-16?

Hi all,

I'm finding that I'm not getting images wide enough when shooting indoors (for Christmas etc) or for landscapes without going all fish eye.

The shortest lens I have is the Sigma 17-70 which is great most of the time, but occasionally its just too close, especially when I don't have the space to move.

I had initially considered the Sigma 10-20 too but looking at the images from the lens archive on another forum just don't look that great on the whole.

I know I'm using a crop which doesn't help but I don't think I can afford to splash out on a new body.

What do you guys think?

Hello, I have been looking at this one too, and there's a few threads on here about it. They all seem to come out well as you'd expect and if you search I think the Canon comes out best, however without going all fishy you will get more out the Sigma.

I have used pixel peeper too for some ideas, or you could try hiring one of them too or borrowing from a pal.

Pixel Peeper is great to show what can be done with a lens, or in my case what I have not yet managed to do.
 
lol, I know what you mean - I'll check pixel peeper and see what that shows.

Although it suddenly struck me I'm probably looking at around £500 and wonder how much a full frame body costs (that'd be on par with the 7D) - I've not looked into it yet but expect it'll be alot!
 
The tokina is the fastest, f/2.8 which would help for handholding it, but it's also the most limited range.

The canon has a good range and IQ but slower than the tokina.

The sigma has good IQ and is the widest, but it's the slowest and doesn't take filters at all (which may or may not put you off).
 
Thank you - I agree the range could be a little limiting, initially I didn't think it would be an issue as I've 17-500 covered but having the lens to hand when needed is another thing.

I was looking about I'm also considering the Sigma 10-20mm F3.5 EX DC HSM Lens, at 3.5 its a pretty good compromise, but I've not seen many images taken with it yet.

I have heard that the 10-20 F3.5 is less sharp than the older (and cheaper) F4-5.6. Something to look up maybe

Thank you again for your help - I've just won the Sigma 10-20mm for just under £290 so not too bad a price, now I hope its a goodie :)
 
I have the 10-22 on a 7D and it makes for some great shots. I'd definitely recommend it.
 
hehe, cheers but a bit late - I got the Sigma 10-20mm, but it was a close thing, had it not have been twice as much I would have gone for the 10-22 in a heartbeat.
 
I have the tokina and its a lovely piece of glass, im glad i went for it
 
Or the Tokina 12-24.

Much more useable range, plenty wide and cheaper.

Depends what you're looking for really.
 
@JohnN - let us know how you get on with the sigma.. im considering buying that for my 550d : )

I have the sigma 10-20 f4 . It's a brilliant lens. Couldn't recommend it more. I do need to use it more !
