Does anyone know if the canon 1.4 x ii extender autofocus work on 400mm 5.6 i believe the 1.4 x iii version does but not sure if the older one did . thanks
 
It’s probably more a question of camera body autofocus. Adding the 1.4 extender reduces light by one stop to f8, means for AF you’re limited to the number of AF points your camera body can use at f8.

i use canon 7d mk ii and 5d mk iii
 
5D mk3 does - works on F8 autofocus, in your manual you'll find a list of lenses and which focus points you can use.
Make sure you have at least firmware V 1.2.1
