I ahve a 1dxmkII and a older canon 300mm thats absoloutly pin sharp at f2.8 so i bought the canon 1.4 tc mkIII and the pics are shockingly bad at f4 .. havent tried anyhting else yet.. bit peeved at moment

Is the mkIII not very good wiht an older 300mm.. wel not that old.. last model before the current mkII 300

I suspect that you have gone thru' the AFMA setup yet, Tony. Try a couple of test shots using Liveview to see if the IQ meets your needs....if they're still beow par then it's not worth the hassle.

FWIW, I found the results (MkI lens and MkIII extender) adequate but not truly exciting.

got busy yesterday.. going to do some testing today.. if it works ok on 70-200 mkii then nowt wrong wiht it.. just the combination of new and old thats the problem maybe :( I dont want to get into the whol calibration thing :(

cheers as always bob :)

I find the 2x TC ok with my 70-200 f2.8 which means that sometimes I'll take that combination rather than include the 100-400 as well. The 1.4tc works ok with the 100-400 for extra reach and I can still autofocus. With the 2x is definitely gets soft, but sometimes needs must to get a record of the moment/subject.

You still missing the 400? Is it still bust?

Even though its cricket.. with t20 and winter months i still need at least f4 so the 70-00 with a x2 might just not make it

i am still using the 400.. the problem is its so random that its hard to send off util i have backup.. the 300 i bought is a brillaint find well happy.. i thought the 1.4tc would have me covered for cricket but not looking good :(

plan B is to keep the 400 for cricket and send off end of sep... sigh haha never gonna get fixed at this rate.. but currently hasnt let me down last 3 matches.. probably will on sat a couple of times then not gain for a few matches.. aaargh :(

Hi Tony
I used the mkiii converter with the 300mm f2.8 mki i.s lens and had no problems at all quality and AF was so good I forgot it was on at times
Only sold the 300mm because of Canon's stopping making spares for them. Should add that was on 1Dx mki, 7D mkii and 5D mkiii.

Well well well.. My first tests where out the bedroom widow at birds and stuff...I actually tried it at a football match tonight shooting at human subjects... late evening so high iso BUT the results look promising... going to try sat morning in daylight but feeling a lot more confident witht he combo now

if it work as should sat then i can get my 400 sent off for repair :)
