I recently bought another used Canon EF lens which came with everything apart from the pouch and box. I have a few of these pouches but only use them with extenders, which I rarely use. Does anyone use them or are they somewhat unnecessary?

I tend to use the cases that come with longer lenses, but not always.

Personally the grey soft cases are completely useless. The larger beige ones for teles can be useful in some cases. Sigma and tamron ones can be actually somewhat useful because they have rectangular rigid shape and can go in a bag slot offering extra protection

I have numerous soft pouches for my Nikon lenses, but use them for storage not carrying around as I consider them to offer negligible protection. The 'pro' lenses have more substantial cases but too cumbersome. For my Pentax gear the pouches are more substantial than the Nikon ones and offer good protection, while the limited lenses have nice classy faux leather string pouches. The Pentax pouches I use for carrying around without worrying about wear or tear, and the small matter of the lenses being fairly small so some padding is welcome.

I have an old, largish, Sigma bag that I clip onto my jeans belt and then carry a lens in it for swapping out when a photo op calls for that lens (usually my Canon 24-105 and EF-M15-45). Add in a spare battery and a polariser (in a case) and it works fine.

She likes it too because it saves her having to find a space in her handbag to look after them for me :)

The only drawback is you need to have the belt pretty tight to stop it sagging down.
