Cannon lens - Am I using the correct set up?

Im taking pictures of a manaquin.. I find my standard lens is great for taking portraight pics fromthe waist up, but when i need a full length image the picture is no where as clear as Id like , I assume this is the lens? If so is there a specific type which will be good for this?

Id go to a proper camera shop for advice but they have all closed, I went to curries but the guy just read the spec label to me... VERY helpful :-(
 
Can you post some sample shots? It could be a number of things but user error can't be ruled out ;)

Hey, no need to gat embarrassed on here. If you don't ask you'll never learn.

Posting a few sample shots on here will be the quickest way to the source of the problem.
 
What focal length is your 'standard' lens? It will be written on it somewhere, in mm. Oh, and we need to know the camera too.
