Yes
Am torn between which one of these two to get.
One issue is the size. The Cannon is smaller and I'm more likely to take it out with me rather than the bulkier Nikon. On the other hand with the Nikon it seems more like you're getting something for your money.
I like the flip-screen also.
Anyone recommend one or the other?
Cheers

I had to decide between these two and went for the Canon. The Canon is lighter and the screen higher res (I think!) which is what swung it for me.

The Nikon does have the flip screen but I'm pretty sure I would never have used that feature.

Canon were doing £50 cashback when I bought mine on 31/12.

Don't think for one moment you'd be disappointed with either to be honest.

It's a very personal choice and they are two damn fine cameras, so I can't help you there, except to say that given your user name, the D5000 would seem to be the logical choice ;).

Besides which, more "0"s are usually a good thing :p.

The only thing I would say against the Nikon is the lack of an AF motor in the body, though being a Canon owner I don't know how much of a hindrance this might be. I'm sure Nikon users can help you here.

what do you like to shoot?

both cameras will do completely different things, canons are known to have really bad results at high ISO's which if shooting sports or wildlife you would go nikon but nikons are bigger than there canon counterparts so if weights an issue or you like the quality of L lenses then go canon.

Cheers Guys.I still dont know which one to go for.

Try them both and buy the one that feels mosy comfortable in YOUR hands.

It is a personal thing and only you can decide. Everyone elses opinions are biased to the one they chose.

I think Nikon have missed a trick here because although both these cameras are ostensibly in the entry level area they are because of their specs likeley to appeal to more advanced amateurs and may well have some decent large glass atttached to get the best out of the file size.I know from experience of my 350D that a smaller body with large glass can be unwieldy and as a result I always have the battery grip on my 350D.The Canon soes have an optional grip the Nikon does not and therefore this may be a problem for the type of user I have mentioned

I went for the D5000, as I thought to myself as I progress and move on I want my lenses and goodies to be able to move up with me for the next camera as I move up.

I have not had a canon but the d5000 is a good camera and has everything I needed to get started.

Video on the Canon can be shot in full HD mode whilst the Nikon is only 720.
Is this significant?

The Canon can do 1080p however it is only at 20fps, which can get juddery for moving or panning shots, so really it's likely you would be running the canon at 720p anyway.

I'm in the same boat with these camera at the minute, I started off wanting the D5000 mainly due to the swivel screen but then I heared the canon had a higher quality display. Reviews indicate there isn't a whole lot of difference picture wise, so I am just going to handle both in a local store and decide.

Thats what Ive been doing.Ive gone to a few stores now(dont want to keep going back to the same place).
Putting aside the tech details of what each camera can do,I think its going to come down to what I like the feel of most and whats looks best.
Whilst when I was younger Nikon for me was a magical name and I always wanted one,Canon is edging it for me at the mo.As the 50 pounds cashback ends wednesday I will have to decide soon.

Too true, too true!

When I started with digital, I read all the magazine tests and looked at pictures on the Internet (of the camera, not from the cameras :D) and decided that the Canon 50D was the model for me .

I (finally) went to a camera shop and asked to hold a 50D, as well as a 7D and (for a laugh :D) a Nikon D300. It was a nightmare :(! This smooth, sexy looking, matt black Canon (which I had set my heart on) felt really odd in my (very large and slightly arthritic) hands :(. When I put my thumb down to the scroll wheel on the back, it felt as thought the camera would fall from my grip (even more so with the heavier 7D). I told myself that I'd just have to learn to live with it, as it was a heck of a lot better than the tiny Olympus E420 that I had at the time :|. Then, I picked up the Nikon ...

It took about the same amount of time as an f/2.8 exposure directly into the sunlight, to realise that this was the body for me :D.

My (and others) point is, don't try and make your mind up about something like this until you've 'handled the goods'. Frankly, it's about as sensible as buying a new pair of shoes over the Internet (although some people do that)!?

What Naboo32 says is absolutely bang on, I had the same (but opposite experience) when comparing the D60 to the 40D. I couldn't get comfortable with the Nikon but the Canon just felt right, and all the controls were where I'd expected. But that is a very personal thing, what works for one person doesn't work for another.

So go out and have a play and buy whichever feels most comfortable :-)

I had the same dilema a couple of weeks ago before I found this forum, went into the local Jessop who to be fair were fantastic and had a play and long chat with the guys there, I spent a few good hours playing and talking to one of the guys there and left to mull over everything they had said and to think about the two cameras I looked at.

I went back on Sunday and bought the Canon 500D and love it, I don't get many days off but have spent them all going out trying to fnid some places to take photo's and already planning on a few days to go play with the camera.

Am learning again as have not touched a camera properly in about 15 years so the knowledge here is invaluable and it's nice to be able to talk about stuff and ask what must be stupid questions to those in the know without being giggled at (although I'm sure theres a few oh here we go agains behind the screen :) )...

Would highly recommend the 500 as even with next to no knowledge am happy with some of the first shots I've taken out of the box with the bundle lenses and already looked to spend more to get better kit lol...

Only thing I forgot to do before buying the camera was to check lens prices as it can be an addictive hobby chasing the perfect shots and wanting the kit to do so!!!

Looks like I'll be going for the Canon and then a bit later on a 55-250 lens.
Have till tommorow as the £50 cashback ends.
When to Camerapricebusters (cheers to the member who gave me the link) John Lewis are selling at £569 without the cashback so infact £519 (good price?)
Rang Jessops as am not near a JL and they will match the price. They were £619.Perfect.

Or the twin lens bundle at jessops at £779, with the 18-55, 70-300, 2x uv filters and 8gb card if you don't have any kit :)

The Camera Centre is currently selling the 55-250mm at £152.24, which with the price match would make a really good bundle price of £721.24 less £50 cash back.

Congratulations, Kan Non ;)!

I saw that but I dont think these bundles are all their cracked up to be.
As pauljs has kindly informed me the 55-250 Canon lens is £152 making
this with the camera only £721.Less the £50 of course which applies to both prices. So with the remaining £58 difference that leaves plenty for me to get the other parts of the jessops kit deal at a better price elsewhere.
So I get to make my own kit with the advantage of a Canon 55-250
instead of the inferior Tamrona and at the same or lesser price.

Ooops, sorry just re-read the Camera Centre price was for the 55-200, however Buyacamera has the 55-250 for £164.99

I had the same dilema before Christmas - ended up with the Canon 500D as well.

Nice bit of kit - a few weeks later I realised that I'd have to get :

Nifty 50, A decent Bag, Lens Cloth, Sensor Blower, filters, tripod, Flash,...

Another decent(larger) bag that I should have got in the first place...

Yeah exactly and it all adds up.
Also to include is camera insurance.

Jessops will basically match the price of any shop thats advertising on the net even if that particular shop or a branch isnt near your town.
Rang a few places this afternoon to try and con a shop into faxing me a quote of lower than £569 for the Canon so I can take it to jessops tommorow but no luck so far.

Rang Jessops just to check they had plenty of Canon 500Ds in stock otherwise if they were low on stock would have gone there after work to get one instead of tommorow.
They only had one in stock and that was the display model ! Pathetic.

Yes friday but when I go in tommorow to pay so as I can still get the 50 cashback I wanna be walking out that door with more than a receit.

For the cashback you need to post in a form and the reciept I thought tomorrow was the last day for reciept of them...

I have a Nikon D5000 and the feel of the camera did it for me.

You have until the 26th of March to send your receipt in to claim the cashback. HTH.

Assume the D5000 is much better than the 450D? As am currently trying to decide between these two.

i am at the same dilema and to be honest i have went from Nikon and then to sony now i am deciding where to go.

I was in the same situation, held a D5000 and a 500D, both felt ok, then I held a D90 and it was perfect :)
