Obvious question (irrespective of whether you're shooting manual or Auto) is what's the problem with the final image and what re you trying to do with it ?
Do you have an example of what you've taken and what your problem is ?
40D is a decent camera but without knowing what image you have and what you're striving for - it's hard to know whether you've an issue we can help with.
Depends how big you're blowing up the images. You're limited by the size of your original image and the dots per inch you want to print with. 300 dpi or 250 dpi is used for most poster or canvas prints.
There are software add on for photoshop that add extra pixels to your original image so that you can blow the image up to very large canvas sizes, but they are limited at the non commercial level because the software is interpreting how to fill in these extra pixels, what colours, details and shades to used so the software has to be very sophisticated and the computing power to process the images, and that doesn't come cheap
When I had a 40D I kep it in RAW for the largest file size. You can get Genuine Fractals (I think that's its name) software to get larger images/interpolation.
10mp is the sensor size. Choose the L jpg or the max RAW file. Easily prints A3. The bigger the print, the farther away the viewer to a reduction in ppi is usually acceptable. Just how big do you want?
