Canera battery question

I have two Canon branded batteries in my grip, now if I understand rightly only one is used at a time. So when it gets to the stage where your batteries need charging before the next shoot, is charging one which is still holding a slight charge doing it any good? I thought I read somewhere that it is ok to do this but I am not totally convinced. Tbh it would be a good idea to have incorporated a discharge button on the camera`s of today, I use to have one on a mobile. Whilst on the subject are there actually any other batteries that are superior to the ones the camera manufacturers provide, after all I would have thought Canon, Nikon dont make them :shrug: just stick their name on them.

Canon say in the bumf that comes with the grip that the batteries are used simultaneously, but I've read that the actual battery in use actually depends on the terminal voltage of each battery (as detected by the grip's eletrickery) and that the supply to the camera is constantly being swapped between batteries. As regards charging and if I understand it correctly, you can charge li-ion batteries from any state of discharge without damaging or the batteries. It's the older Ni-Cad (nickel cadmium) type batteries which should be completely discharge before recharging because these batteries suffer from 'memory effect' which causes them to lose capacity if constantly charged before being fully discharged. As an aside, it's also perfectly acceptable to use batteries with differing capacities and/or state of charge in a grip together.

Thanks Steve its probably just me not realising sometimes how many shots Ive taken, how many times I view the image, alter settings, delete etc etc etc whilst out with the camera

Pretty sure I've read somewhere that LiIon batteries shouldn't be allowed to get exhausted before recharging. In any case, it does them no harm to charge them from any state.
