hi my friend has asked me how to photograph people by candlelight he has a nikon camera and a nikon 50mm lens unfortunatley
i havent a clue so i told him i would ask here

he wants to take a candlelit portrait shot of his partner and he is abit unsure of how to go about it.

and advice appreciated

Same as you would any other shot really, analyse the scene and select the correct settings. You'll need to raise the ISO to compensate for the low light, use a low ish aperture too. I'd use aperture priority and try f/2 ISO 800 and see if the shutter speed is acceptable. If not, raise the ISO or change the aperture to f/1.8.

You may need to manual focus, depending just how dark it is.

With a light source and some orange gels. If he wants to shoot video, he'll need to add a gold reflector and someone to waggle it to make the appearance of being lit by flickering flame.
 
White balance needs to be thought about as well. While a certain amount of warmth is pleasing in candlelit shots, you don't want the subject to look like a TOWIE girl! Have a play and see which setting gives the warm glow without the spray tan orangeness (or shoot in raw and play in PP.)
