Cancelling Sky tv

I cancelled our Sky subscription a few years ago, never looked back since! I have still got my cancellation letter to remind me never to give Murdoch another penny :)

I don't pay him a penny but I'm happy to watch the channels ;)

When I changed insurance companies a few years ago, the new company said just cancel the direct debit and that I didn't need to tell the old company.

Although it is polite to contact Sky (in this case) I would still cancel the direct debit first then just inform Sky that I had done it rather than rely on them to cancel it.

Steve.

Pretty bad advice, and potentially very expensive penalties could follow your advice. Just cancelling a normal DD could end up with a default, or the account handed to a DCA and a bit of credit file pain for 6 years (hopefully anyone going the "just cancel the DD" advice doesn't want a mortgage in the next 6 years after doing that).

With an insurance company it can be far worse, the company could try and take the DD which then fails, a particularly nasty insurance company could then cancel the policy as non-payment. Have you noticed the question "have you even had insurance cancelled?" when buying insurance?

Try a quote with that ticked as Yes, and see what a loading that could put on your policy .

It's never a good idea to just cancel a DD as a means to end a contract or because of a dispute, it will always hurt you more than the company. Cancel the contract and then cancel the DD, once you have confirmation.

I wouldn't just cancel the DD without informing the company but I have always cancelled it first then informed them.

That way, you're not asking them to cancel the policy/contract/etc, you're telling them to.

Steve.

In passing I was informed that you can buy a viewing card for a Sky HD box which "converts" the box to receive all the Fresat channels.

I am digging into this and will vef back with results.
